Why Madonna, not Sheila E. Did the Prince tribute.

Okay, I'm am old geezer, and I am certainly out of touch with most modern era music. Madonna and Prince are the only two names in this post that I am familiar with. But I will say this, it is sad that cooperate America is trying to cash in on the "Prince" brand after his unfortunate death.
While I do not presume to know a lot about the man, I think was the very type of stuff he abhorred.

Well, they were kinda right. Shelia E had some success of her own but then hitched her wagon to Prince. My wife thought Madonna was an odd choice, but they were contemporaries, so whatever. At the end of the day no artist's work will ever be better than when they did it. A tribute is a nice thing, but you will never make everyone happy because it just isn't as good as the original.
Perry, in every likelihood, didn't mean to be disrespectful: she only stated a fact, namely that they wanted a big name in the industry and one that most people are familiar with. However, as an artist herself she knew better than to use the stupidest word in the English language. Under the pretense of "that which is important, that matters" (to whom?) way more trivial concepts, and themselves not clearly distinguished, such as "that which moves product" and "that which pop music critics, in their unfathomable idiocy, deem worthy of discussion or mere mention", are typically meant when one describes a musician as "relevant". It was frequently heard in every episode of web series Yacht Rock, with portraited famous 70s soft rock staples reciprocally accusing one another of "irrelevance" - to humorous effect. Die, word, die!
BET will do a tribute in June. I suspect they will use artists with a more substantial connection to Prince.
Why does what Linda Perry says matters ? She's not very relevant either, her last hit was 20 years ago.
Tempest in a teapot. The media keeps hoping the 'deceased artist' thing will really take the off. But beyond generating a lot of chatter on the net (here for example), it never turns into the big windfall for the labels that they hope it will be.
With all due respect towards Prince, he was a pop star. Not a national hero, or somebody who was a complete game changer in the larger scheme of things. From what I saw, he was a talented but temperamental recluse who could write a good song, and put on a spectacular stage show. So I prefer to keep it all in perspective. His death, while tragic - especially in light of how it probably was avoidable - is still what it is: the passing of a popular entertainer. So while I can sympathize and feel a certain sadness, as I would over any productive life cut short, I can't say I am devastated by it. Nor do I feel any desire to form a church around it like some of his fans apparently want to.
But that's me. I'm sure there are many who will disagree.

The hilarious thing about this is that back in the day, Madonna was basically the anti-Prince.
All those "awards" shows are essentially the artistic equivalent of People magazine- fake bulls*it for the masses.

I think you might want to look at sales. Prince has moved a lot of product since his death.
Exactly. You'd be surprised how much money the 'labels' make off Prince. Pre & Post death. And his estate will get very little from it. Disrespectful!
Saw it just horrible choice, not matter why they made that decision, it did no justice to Prince as an artist or his fans. Should have had Bob Dylan up there what would have been the difference there was no thought in the thing anyway imo.
I was disappointed as well with Madonna as the one picked to do this. I realize she's a huge 80's icon but I think they missed the boat on this.
I actually was secretly hoping it would be Bruno Mars backed by the Revolution. I think that would have been killier! And then the Time joining in. Afterall Morris Day is Prince's cousin too.

That would have been cool! Still, I think Sheila E needed to be involved. Just look at videos of them together. They had a rare connection.

I loved the tribute because I love Prince and to me it wasn't about the presenters but the person who was being honored but would it have been nice to see Sheila, Morris, Wendy & Lisa, Jimmy & Terry and Dr Fink? of course but it didn't happen. The playing of Purple Rain was perfect and to see the crowd bathed in purple singing that song was something very special to me it was my final goodbye to a genius and musical tsunami. I won't watch another tribute I will leave him to rest in peace and pray the surving family does everything possible to keep his legacy alive.

These shows always seem to miss what the fans really want. In this day an age of technology, they could have easily done research and polled Prince fans to see who they would love to see do the tribute. Make a more informed decision. I can guarantee it wouldn't have been Madonna! And I'm not bashing Madonna either. I will be forthcoming and admit I do like her music and think she is a talented performer. Just the wrong choice for this.
