Why Modern Music Is Awful

I've heard this same argument over and over, which is that modern music sucks. For the sake of this argument, modern music can only consist of Lady Ga Ga, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber. Comparatively, old music was always awesome, and for the same sake of the argument, can only consist of Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and Cream or something like that. In fact, I can barely get through a week without discovering an interesting new band. The internet is full of them. YouTube is overflowing with them. Bandcamp is bursting with them. In fact, this is a fantastic time to be a music lover. All you have to do is get out there a little and start digging a little. One newish album I like a lot is Music For People In Trouble by Susanne Sundfor. Another is Nowhere Now Here by Mono. Great albums do still come out.
And back in the day, music wasn't always great by any means. I used to think that if I had to hear that Phil Collins Sussudio song one more time that I would bite own ears off.

Maybe I'm alone in this but when I hear "modern music sucks" comments I don't assume the person uttering those comments actually believes that all modern music sucks.

I always assume they mean ALL modern music sucks. The people I know like that simply do not listen. About five seconds into a song they have decided that it was not recorded before 1968 so it is garbage. The vast majority of music listeners (not musicians only) firmly believe the very best music ever made was made when they were 17 years old and everything else is crap.

I think it's a lot more fun to seek out and find new music that motivates and inspires.... But, if you want to wallow in negativity and hate, knock yourself out.

Why do so many bristle at the prospect of hearing opinions pertaining to musical tastes? Imagine the paucity of posts on a music themed message board such as this if only the indisputable facts could be discussed!

There will always be opinions, particularly when it comes to art forms such as music. Some - gasp- may even be different than your own. Everyone get used to the idea and it'll all be ok.

i don't listen to the radio, so i'm not on top of "modern music" from a commercial point of view.. but i do listen to the latest releases over at bandcamp.com, and i have to say, there are a lot of great bands out there... so my only conclusion is, you're source is the problem, not the artists.

Music, like bass tone, is very subjective. People like what they like, who's to criticize. I know people who find music irritating.

I really don't like a lot of the music my son listens to, but it inspires him to play his drums 2 hrs a day, so in my books, it's great music.

These threads get old really fast.

Not all modern music is awful, but I'd rather play La Villa Strangiato rather than I Kissed a Girl. YMMV.
