Why, oh why? (Pedalboard overkill content)

I've never owned a bass pedal. I've never played music the would require it. But that being said, we shared the stage with a rock band of younger guys last night at a festival, and their bass player had a lot of pedal use going on, and I thought they were great. A really solid original band, and they sounded kind of sabbath meets zeppelin meets Weezer meets Floyd.

So I guess I can appreciate it without needing to do it myself.

I think maybe after a certain point you just want people to be happy. I would never own a board like this because I did the massive rack effects/pedalboard/rig thing in the ‘90s and I no longer feel the need to do that anymore. What makes me happy now is a very small pedalboard, IEMs, no amp, and a five minute load in/tear down time. But the big rig made me really happy in the 90s, and if the big pedalboard makes this guy/gal happy, then more power to them.

Dude shows up at a gig last night in a relatively small club with quite a small stage for a 8-piece band and THIS is the pedalboard he lays down and hooks up:

Mind you, this was a for an early gig (7:30 to 10:30pm) with a 1980s cover band. His board and amp alone took up about a fifth of the overall stage. The drummer had a smaller footprint!

All I can say is, why? Even if you're an effects maven, would you show up with such a ridiculous rig, bragging about the fact that it lights up, when you probably wouldn't use more than two of the pedals on the board?

This band included three female singers, a singing sax player, a singing keyboard player, a singing drummer, a singing guitar player, in addition to the non-singing bass player.

I was just flabbergasted. I mean, really, WT... you know the rest!

(I do wish I had the guy's money, though -- That board must have cost more than my car!)

Why? Well, why not? Seriously, I’ve never had an issue with the kit/instrument/rig etc of any fellow musician on the bandstand providing 1) it doesn’t take up everyone else’s space 2) they don’t need hours to set it up when there are only minutes available 3) they are prepared and willing to carry it in and out themselves if everyone else is lugging their own gear plus PA, lights etc, and 4) most importantly, they play tight and sound good in a band context (ie not just solo bedroom noodling).

Pass those four tests and I don’t mind what is down at their feet/hanging on a strap/racked up around them etc etc... pedals designed to produce sounds audible only to dolphins, mountains of keyboards stacked up like an Inca temple, LED lights visible from the International Space Station... whatever, mate. If it works for them, and it works for the band, and it works for the audience, well then... it works!

Regarding the whole "all those pedals and he didn't even use them" thing, at least half of mine are on almost all of the time. I might only step on things a couple of times in a set. Never felt a need to be tap-dancing on my board the whole night to justify having it there.

I see pedalboards like this and wonder, by the time it's been through the PA, if there'd be much difference to using a Zoom B3n or similar, some wacky effects excepted. For the price of 25% of those pedals you could probably buy two B3ns and have a spare.
