So is it a case of folks hating on it because it's really best for Disco/Motown,
and should never be used elsewhere??
Motown? Really?

Not sure how anyone could hate this, if only because you gotta respect the time it took to get this good.
I played over a thousand gigs in bars and clubs during the 80s in a very popular band in Monterey, California, and in all that time i spent maybe 10 minutes slapping. Please, I can think of 100 songs without slap from the '70s alone.
If you like it, fine, but to me a lot of it sounds like one character chasing another in a video game.

I take it Mohini Dey's slap doesn't tickle your fancy? I'd agree with you. Bridge pickup slapping = no thanks. It's just that slap sounds extremely harsh and just terrible when not played in a tasteful manner.
Good stuff, but I also only made it in a minute before quitting.I respect the talent fine, but I'd be annoyed listening to a song with that style for 4 minutes.
On the other end of the spectrum are those bassist that slap when it comes time to solo. Why? Because they cant melodicaly solo..they dont know how.
Why would you think that? Because in all the movies we see artists are open minded lefties and businessman are closed minded righties? Why would someone's artistic ability pre-determine their views on social mores, finances or a country's approach to crime?I would think musicians or "artist" in general would be open minded but it is far from it.
Yes."Seinfeld" wasn't even recorded on a bass.
The slap bass in Seinfeld wasn’t recorded on a bass
These are the reasons that I think some people don’t like slap:
1. They suck at it and try to justify that by tearing it down any chance they get to make themselves feel better.
2. People that suck at slap are trying to buy a new bass and get immediately frustrated that a bass they might be considering only garners slap wankery on YouTube search.
3. It’s become a parody unto itself in that it’s like a dark cloud hovering over every self conscious bass player, and is pretty much the first thing that comes up when discussing it with anyone showing a pedestrian interest or just trying to humour us. Slappa da bass, man?
4. Some people genuinely have little interest in the style or technique, despite having the skills to utilize it.
