Why the hate towards guitarists?

maybe it's because most play too loud, only listen to themselves and don't understand that the bass is more important to the group.

I think this is a little narrow minded. Bass and guitar play 2 seperate parts in a band situation and saying the bass is the most important seems a little biased. A band is several parts coming together to make a whole. With out guitar it would seem empty just as if drums or bass were left out

I've played with guitarists who assumed the bass' sole purpose is to beef up the tone of the rhythm guitarist, and I've played with guitarists who asked me to turn up and play around with the chord structure to see how it sounds. Obviously one's a guitard, and the other's not. But then again, basstards and drumtards exist and we all know how singtards are.

It is facinating (but boringly expected) that some bass players actually have themselves convinced that the bass is the most important part of the band, and everyone else is of secondary importance. Self-centerism is so typical of human behavior. We humans are notorious for this! We humans are so good at thinking that we are more important than we really are. The truth is, the bassist is no more and no less important that the other instruments/members in a band.

Now, if someone in the band is a jerk, then regardless of what instrument they play, they should be replaced with a normal person. Case in point: David Lee Roth. Great singer and great match for that band, but what a complete jerk!

100% agree... it's actually the songs that are the most important part of the band, we musicians are *all* secondary!

Ok, so through months being on talkbass, I've seen and heard a lot of abuse towards guitarists...Why?

Is it because you need more power than them? Is it because they are more in the spotlight than you?

I'm intrigued.

I use the word "guitard" jokingly. I love working w/ guitarists as much as they love working w/ me. They don't want to (can't) do my job and I definitely don't want to (can't) play guitar.

Also, the last few guitarists I've worked w/ ARE the clumsy, forgetful, unprepared types. The kind that need an instrument cable, 9 volt battery, or get lost on the way to a gig. They're no more ******** than I am "weird" for having spare cables, batteries, amps, tools, etc at every gig.

i understand many guitarists might not have a decent grasp on theory etc, but i see more local bands with terrible bassists that have no idea what they are doing than i do terrible guitarists with no idea. it is absolutely a two way street(3 if you count awful drummers, 4 singers and so on..).

I agree, and I tip my hat to guitarists (and others) who know there stuff! I also can't stand crappy bassists and see WAY too many in the local bars. On the other hand, I'm a self taught player w/ very little theory.... luckily my ear and feel are good enough though that I can hang w/ the trained musicians, thank God :-).

Yea I don't understand it either..
It's childish to hate guitarist, or other instrument player..

I always good friend with guitarists, and they're cool. Maybe way cooler than some bass players I know, and definitely cooler than some bassists/TBer who often act childishly here.
