Why the hate towards guitarists?

you wouldn't think it would be in 2011, sadly some people want the world run according to religion.

Careful fractious. There are some touchy-feely people on TB that will get poopy if you venture down certain paths. (I found that out the hard way.....I still have scorch marks from the flaming!) So my friend, for your own safety, and for the well being of humanity on this planet (not to mention the "sensitive feelings" of some folks), my very humble advice to you is to stick to comments that are bass related. It's much safer!! (Also, TB rules stipulate that the topic you touched on shall not be discussed in the bass forums.)

... but, they do seem to have a disproportionate number of volume-hogs than most other instruments..

I guess you don't get very many harp players around your way do you?

Over the years I've had occasion to ask from time to time...which came first the ego or the guitar? But it's not something I lose much rest fretting over.

Oh and BTW, it's the clod holding it and not the instrument, so don't blame the inanimate object...it has no choice in the matter. it's also a fact no instrument is immune from the possibility it might be picked up by a self centered, immature, A-hole clod, so how about we lighten up on the instruments and concentrate on the actual cause of all this agita.

Fave lightbulb joke...How many (insert instrument here) players does it take to change a light bulb? Just one, they hold the bulb up and the world revolves around them.

I once knew a guy who played spoons and a washboard. He was decent, but nothing to write home about. He was also the most insufferable clod on this planet. When we weren't playing we were having to hear (nonstop) what a great improvisational spoon player he was and how underrated spoons were as a musical instrument. I'm usually one to let the blowhards blow as hard as they feel they need to, but after the second straight day of a 3 day road trip with spoon meister jabbering on and on and on about himself and his magic spoons I reached my breaking point and informed spoonman if he didn't feel like he needed to know from personal experience just how difficult and painful it would be to remove said spoons from deep in his rectum he would STFU about them. He sulked for a while as any child will do when called down, even if that child is 34. As soon as we got back home he quit the band, and oddly enough no one missed him...not even a little bit.

I'll give you one completely rational reason why guitarists are harder to get along with than pianists, drummers etc. There are a lot of them, every guitarist knows at least a few others, and know every gig they play there will probably be a few guitarists in the audience, so they tend to see other guitarists as their peers. That means they want to be the kind of people other guitarists like - have gear other guitarists think is cool, have musical tastes other guitarists approve of, play solos... A lot of guitarists are subconsciously afraid to do things that would make other guitarists think less of them.

I mean, I can pluck an open string for an entire five-minute song. I can ask the band if they want to do some Saturdays or Colt Ford songs. I can ask what the chords for "House Of The Rising Sun" are. For a guitarist, doing any of those would risk losing the respect of many of their friends. That makes it harder for us to get along.

Coincidence?

Anyone who judges someone by the instrument they play, or makes assumptions because they play a particuar instument is obviously a very narrow thinker. I assume they're kids, amateurs, just plain stupid, or all three.
Geez. Do any of you open-minded people ever do anything other than display your intellectual and moral superiority to others?

The stereotypes are true, and they are fun.

I've admittedly used the term guitard once or twice in the past, but wouldn't use it anymore. I've had problems with guitarists in the past, but also keyboardists, drummers (drummer RAAAAAGGGEEEE!), and singers.

Nowadays, I just use the one catch-all that covers all of them.

Idiot.

It doesn't matter what instrument someone plays, or if they even play one at all. An idiot is an idiot.

I don't have any hate or disrespect for guitarists (at least not anymore) since I've found where my place in a band setting is, and become comfortable with that role.

Go easy on the word guitard, I'm sure I'm not the only one who considers it an affectionately teasing joke-word. I get along well with most guitarists I've met, as I do with most musicians regardless of instrument. I see no harm coming from a little teasing. If anyone is overly offended by an internet nickname from a bass forum, they might be taking it too seriously. Or I might not have read the truly evil and hate-filled threads.

You consider it intellectual superiority to recognize bad behavior? Okay then, maybe it is. It's better than not doing so.
See, there you go again, talking about how you're "better". Ha ha.

And in all seriousness, there are certain flaws that guitarists are more likely to have. Other flaws are more common among pianists, or bassists, or trumpet players.

It's mainly a joke really, some take it seriously, but those who do are basstards. Also Guitard has a better ring than Drumtard, voctard and keytard (although keytard sort of has a ring to it). We don't use basstard, because we're bassists.

IMO, guitard shouldn't be used for every person who plays guitar but for those who are both idiotic and play guitar.

Ive liked all the guitarists Ive played with (and currently play with), but there is one thing that has been pretty universal with all of them: they are volume inept. Every single one of them cant keep their volume in line with the rest of the band. But, this is just my personal experience, I know not every guitarist is this way.

I was going to add my comment, but Faderoktopus beat me to it, just about word for word.:bassist:
