Why the hate?

I and others will sometimes offer strong opinions. As is the case here some people misread a firm opinion as one's being a know it all or just a jerk. I don't always put "in my view" or "in my opinion" in mt posts. So what. It is an opinion forum. What I say being my opinion should go without saying. I could name several others here who simply lay out what they think in bold colors and are often seen as jerks for it. I won't drag them into whatever mission you are on here. They would probably care about as much as I do anyway. ;)

As someone who's never had an issue with you, one of two things is going on.
1. You state strong opinons and people are being cry-babies that you disagree.
OR
2. You state opinions rudely or simply insult things you don't like.
If it is the former - you are NOT what this thread is about - I have very strong opinions myself and agree with you that in an opinion forum it goes without saying that what I say or you say is our opinion and so IMHO, etc is not necessary.
If however, you are the latter - you are not stating an opinion you are trolling.
If you don't like something - great I just might learn something from you when you point out its legitimate flaws.
If you just insult people for disagreeing and use disrespectful language about things that are not your taste, you are not adding to the conversation, you are being a douche.
As I say - I haven't had an issue with you so I am not suggesting which of the two options you are - you will have to figure out which you are. If you are the first, you are a fine addition to the community - I for one wouldn't come back if there weren't differing opinions here to make it interesting.

Perhaps I misinterpreted what the thread was about. My whole point for chiming in at all was simply to float the possibility that the lines get blurred based on how one's opinions get taken in context.

Perhaps the people who "go off spouting hate" about GC (or Fender or whatever) don't really feel all that strongly about it. But their opinions are interpreted as hatred because we don't have the benefit of body language, tone, inflection etc. Some peole (myself included) write in a manner that is sarcastic. That may get misread (and I guess in my case often does since someone felt the need to single me out here) as stronger feelings that the writer intended.

I would argue that nobodoy sits around stewing over their last bad experience at GC. Nobody really hates P basses or pointy basses. Nobody here had delusions of self importance (although obvoously I come across that way or I would not have been hounded like I was). Nobody actually wishes harm to come to someone with whom they disagree. My point is that it probably isn't as bad as one might think around here. People probably don't really hate as much as you think. Even if they use words like "suck" or "useless" or "sorry" they probably don't really feel all that strongly about it. They are just the kind of people who use "suck" when they mean "not my favorite".

If I am way off base on the topic of the thread then I apologize for wasting your time.

While you are probably right that some (much) of the perceived hate is lack of context and cues - the term "hate" is a slang (ie NOT literal) and means people who are rude/insulting/disrespectful/mean on forums. It does include "sucks" if that is all you say.
For instance: This is a common scenario.
1. Some kid comes on and says (honestly) "I don't understand why people love 'grapes' so much".
2. A half a dozen guys come on and try to tell them why they like them.
3. Some guy comes on and says 'grapes' SUCK! Eat Oranges - they RULE!
OR
3. Some guy comes on and says "If you don't like grapes it's because you are ignorant and wouldn't know a fruitbowl from a lawnmower. Anyone who questions the dominance of Grapes is a NUBE and deserves to boiled in their own apple-juice.
4. People get annoyed.

The guy in step 3 did not add anything of value to the conversation he has simply insulted people with a differing opinion.

If they guy in step 3 said.
"Well actually, grapes are not nearly as dominant in fruitsalad as you seem to think. In fact, around here I see way more cherries in fruit salad than I ever do grapes..."
OR
"Grapes are fine if that's your thing. However, if the style of fruit salad you enjoy is canned, than you might find that Peaches are more effective as they are larger and fuzzier and tend to have fewer tannins which can give some people headaches."
OR
Grapes are most popular because they are the fruit many of us grew up on as southern-European fruit was the dominant fruit fro much of the 20th century, but Grapefruit have begun to become more popular as more and more people are enjoying Florida fruits in their fruit salad"

Than that person is adding to the conversation and they will find they are not annoying the other people in the discussion because they aren't just insulting the topic or the OP or the contributors for no reason other than the fact that they, personally, don't care for grapes.

This may be the best disertation on fruit variations I've ever read. Some days its worth stoppin by, you never know what you might learn or what thoughtful insight you might gather. And some think this is all about the bass.

Well, for the record, I'm Middle Aged, don't have kids and I've ALWAYS been angry and bitter.
As far as the "haters" are concerned. Most of them seem to fall into the garbage I remember when I was a kid in High School and you had be a "Fender Guy" or an "Ibanez Guy" or a "Gibson Guy" (not too many of those in High School though) and everything else was trash. Even at the time I thought, "Gee I like Teles, Strats, P's J's AND LPs, Sgs, EBs AND SRs and Talmans," so I really didn't get the "with us or against us" attitude to things.
As I've "matured" I've noticed my contempories became a lot LESS like that as they found they could afford both a Tele and an LP or a P and an EB.
So I don't think that the "hate" is exclusive (or even mostly) angry, middle aged men. I'd say there are douches in all age, gender, etc groups and that much of the foolishness on internet for a reflects, if anything, as much youthful foolishness as it does middle-aged angst.
But I really don't know what other TB posters have going on at home, so it's just my guess.

Well, first of all, I'm not allowed to play my bass(es) here at work; but I can mess with the computer all I want. So, some of us get to do both.:D
Next; "middle aged.. filled with rage"? I never was, when I was middle aged; it takes too much emotional energy, and I'm waayy too lazy for that. "Annoyed" is as far as I'm willing to go.;)
Finally; Hate? I really hope people are using "hate" as slang for "don't care for"; real hate is a scary thing, and there's too much of the real thing already. And personally, it falls into the same category as rage; I'm too lazy. "Mild Dislike" is about it for me.:)

And that just scratches the surface. It doesn't even get into distressed finishes, tolex, impedence, Ampeg, Greenboy, or anything else. Get on with it please. Six pages of arguing and missing all of those critically important things to argue about is a sign of sloth and incompetence. The sloth and incompetence police will be by shortly to lecture all of us about the virtues of Graniax if we don't tighten it up.

That's a big part of it IMO, but any controversy needs at least two sides.

Another big part of it is that there seems to be a significant number of 'me, too's', or 'clubbers', or whatever else is the best term, who don't seem to have a very wide range of experience and are 'narrow'. It seems to be easy for them to call those that have other, different likes/dislikes bassed on their experiences 'haters'. This happens in other areas of society regarding 'issues' as well as here on TB. They like to use the 'hate' word liberally, thinking it puts them in a better light than those that disagree with, or distain their own choices or ways.

And there's always those that only see things as Black or White, Love or Hate...no grays or sort-of's.

I believe a grapefruit is the perfect way to eff up a fruit salad... Way to harsh tasting and will stand out in the mix. And not in a good way.

I totally agree - talk about something people either love or hate - GRAPEFRUIT
I have a theory (no scientific support) that the bitter flavour in Grapefruit is like phenylthiourea in that I think some people can taste it and some people can't.

For those of you who forget grade 9 science class - that was the little paper strips that you lick and about half the class tastes nothing and the other half tastes pure unadulterated evil. It's a genetic thing - you can either taste it (me) or you are can't (lucky).

As said elsewhere - no one actually cares if anyone else doesn't care for or even actually "hates" what they like - this B**ch session is about the people who can't stop themselves from intruding on conversations about something they like and insulting the people in the thread or being disrespectful, unkind and insulting. "Hate" is what the haters (aka "Trolls") do.
Without disagreements this would be the most boring board in the world. But without the idiots who have to insult some kid's new Bass with "I only buy American" or "Those SUCK" or whatever other insult jumps into their little minds, it would be even better.
For example - while the two of us have similar tastes (based on how often I see your avatar and our mutual membership in the Dano Club) I'm pretty sure we've disagreed but neither one of us has felt the need to get rude or condescending. That's called discussion - we like that. We don't like the other thing.
