Why would anyone not play bass?

The uncool instrument are the triangle, the accordion, and the oboe. Tambourine and cowbell could also be considered uncool, but it depends on the player.

Accordion? Nobody is cooler than this guy

To be honest, more then a few people I've met over the years who viewed playing bass as it's own experience and not as a demotion due to band politics or talent have ended up preferring to play bass in other projects. Once you flip your mind from melodies and posing solos, you find that filling the bass section is very rewarding. This goes for DB, tuba, bass clarinet, baritone sax and everything else considered "less sexy".

Clarinet? Very cool if in a klezmer band...

I think you just made my point for me.

(Before anyone gets up in arms, I’m joking. I appreciate lots of styles of music. I find I really like to see people express their talent with enthusiasm, whether in music, sports, art, whatever, even if it isn’t a style or sport that I naturally gravitate to.)
