Will Smith just threw a $50m punch

This just sucks. It’s a scripted show, the joke was scripted and approved, I feel like there’s a <0.03% chance that at least five high up people directed Will to throw a slap or punch with the idea of it simultaneously boosting next year’s viewership and being a Woke Moment for them.
He was effectively playing the role he played in his biggest films and he’s losing his career that he easily had another 15-25 years left in. Now he’s got to tighten his belt and live a lot more like a normal person than what he’s used to.
But the people who wrote the joke which no legitimate comedian in their right mind would write due to it referencing a movie made before most of the show’s viewers’ parents had even gone through puberty… those people get to keep their careers.
1997 is when GI Jane came out, FFS. Chris Rock knows better than to write a joke whose frame of reference has a wider gap with the current time than what Seth MacFarlane would write.

Chris Rock is 58, Will Smith is just a few years younger. Just about anybody in that age bracket is gonna recognize the GI Jane title, it was a widely known film, and Demi Moore's hairstyle in it was a bit infamous. Not the least bit hard to believe Chris would toss that off as a sort of throwaway joke, which is how it was delivered. Then Will did his thing and suddenly it's all important and everything.
What is hard to imagine is Will Smith planning to throw away his popularity with that bit of foolishness.
