Winter Build Off 2022: 5 String Fretless Neck Through

This thing is going to look insane. Can't wait to see how it continues to come together.
I’ve honestly learned something from each persons build. Not sure how to pick a vote
All are worthwhile learning experiences. I try to go with the ones where the end result appeals to me (or my gut) for the "voting" phase and I'm often far off the winners, but then, the point isn't to vote for the ones that win, it's to vote for the ones you like, and hope that helps them win. And if not, they get some votes, at least. But I kinda actively avoid thinking about it until after the finish line is crossed, and then try to really consider each on how I react to it. Given more categories I guess there might be more votes this time, so not just pick 3. But I'm not concerning myself with that (even if it's been discussed) until the voting post goes up, and then we'll know.
I find it exceedingly difficult. I have a plan, think it makes sense and then I agonize over it before making the final choices and then wishing I could undo and choose again. Exceedingly difficult.
I'm planning to stick to Scoops model wherein each voter (any talkbass user) gets three votes for each category.

So, funny story (to others, not to me):
Back in the early 90s I was racing at my local short track. We went to the awards banquet at the end of the season and I was fairly confident that I had a good shot at winning "best appearing car". That award was voted on by all the drivers in the class. I was young and naïve, and one of the other drivers, a good friend of mine, came over and said "So this is always a mess because everyone wants to just vote for themselves. So I'll make you a deal, you vote for me and I'll vote for you." So I voted for him, because that was our deal. He also voted for him and every other driver voted for themselves, so he won because I was literally the only driver that didn't vote for themselves.
All that to say, I plan on voting for myself.......three times! Good luck suckers! 
Oh, for those interested, his car was literally just rattle can flat black with pink numbers, spray painted on like some graffiti tagger. He ran half the season with a pressure treated wooden 4x4 post bolted on his front bumper because the stock one got ripped off in a wreck. That was what won "best appearing car".

That's classic.When I was in my first year of Cub Scouts, I was sooooo excited to participate in the PineWood Derby. My mom let me use one of her insanely sharp stainless steel paring knives to carve it. (You know, the ones with the metal handles that everybody has in the drawer?) Anyway, I cut the living crap out of myself several times in the process. When I was done, I painted it yellow and put every sticker on it that I could get out of the Cheerios boxes (that was the going prize in the Cheerios box at the time). I was really proud of that car and I couldn't wait for everyone else to see it. When it was my turn to race my first heat, I took my car up to the guy who was staging the cars at the top of the track and he said, "Which end is the front?".
I was crushed.

Time to plunge route some holes right smack in the middle of this thing. I always dread this part. So many things to potentially go wrong, but I made it through and so did the bass.
I started things off by making a template that included both pickup routes in one handy unit. Then I mounted that with the trick using the centerline as a guide. I was going to hog out some material with a forstner bit, but alas, my beloved Makita batteries are no longer taking a full charge. So, I could only make a couple pathetic starter holes.
Today I used the Big Daddy Bosch with a 1/2 pattern bit to hog out the bulk of the material. I chased that using the Little Baby Bosch with a 3/8" pattern bit to get into the corners properly.
There we go, minimal drama.
And they actually fit.
Lost a little more weight. Down to 5lbs, 13.6oz. Still a little more carving to go.

Control holes and jack hole drilled.
Fingerboard leveling.
Fingerboard sanded and polished.
Making a nut from ebony.
Bridges are mounted.
Nut is roughly slotted.
Strung it up and did a very rough setup.
Now it's time to break it down. I'll spend a solid day refining the carving, contours and lines and sanding up through the grits. If finishing goes well, I may just squeak it in.
Time to get the details wrapped up and prep this thing for finish.

Haha! Thanks, Tim. I'm really struggling to get this one wrapped up. That "one day" to refine the carve has already turned into 2 days... I'm going to start sanding in an hour or so. If I finish before the deadline, it will be a miracle.
Reminds me of that "One Day Build" Ben over at Crimson just wrapped up. Took him 10 days.
I'll be honest, I'm jealous of all these people that can build basses so much nicer than I can.

Yeah, Ben sometimes has a problem with staying focused... I get it, I find myself chasing tangents and wild ideas all the time. I just wished I had started this thing 2 weeks earlier!
