Yeah, I did. The first issue is that it's a constant blended radius, so trying to get that evenly scraped is next to impossible. The other issue is that the scraper digs into the softer areas and leaves it rippled and uneven. I think if I just keep going, it will get to a point where it will eventually submit... if not, I have a couple other ideas that are so crazy, they might just work. OK, not crazy, but will probably work nonetheless. :D

Yeah, I think I should show another picture of this stuff. It literally comes off in shreds with 120 grit sandpaper. It is bizarre. I did try the scraper and it just digs in and leaves ripples where the grain is soft.

Yep, that's part of what my crazy plan was, LOL. Just not sure if it will discolor the wood too much. It may come around once it gets sanded more today. I'll find out for sure! :)

Some very soft areas mixed in there. I've never had any mahogany do this to me before, but I've heard other folks discuss it. I'm just going to keep sanding it finer and hope it resolves itself. Maybe you should roll with it rather than fight it. This could be a higher power telling you that the world has too many glossy basses and not enough fuzzy ones.

I really wish you lived near me. I've got a fretless I got on the cheap with visions of refinishing it. Now I'm realizing I dont have the skill/tooling for refinishing. I'm resisting the visions of seeing it in the trash can.

Very nice work. Love it. :thumbsup:

Those are some sort of mystery wood that ships with the vise. They have a urethane pad on their inner face to protect your work while in the jaws. That vise is basically a pattern makers vise and cannot tell you how handy they are for this sort of work. It is in constant use in my shop.

Thanks! Most of the success in finishing comes from the prep work, regardless of what type of finish you're using. So, you mostly need lots of grits of sandpaper and patience. :D
