Winter Build Off 2022 - Back to '56

It was -3c this am, but for Victoria, that is incredibly cold. At around 60% humidity it was brutal. I grew up on the prairies and would rather have the wind chill than the frozen damp clinging to my bones.

Kansas here. Wind chill is ALL we get, and it’s friggin brutal.

Oh, and apparently we've also had the 3rd snowiest winter on record... ever.

Ah, that's where all the snow went. We've hardly seen any snow all winter.

In fact, we've hardly seen any winter. Mostly early spring weather with temperatures above freezing point, and a mixture of wet days and very nice days.

Feels like Spring Build Off.

Many moons ago, I did a solo bowhunt out of my van for 4 days, up in hill country on some state land. I slept in a sleeping bag, on top of a foam pad.
2 of the nights it was down to just above freezing,.....but 80% humidity.
I felt like I was in a car wreck when I woke up. It absolutely is the worst.

Hey! I’m two and 3/4s western states and half a province away! Don’t make me come up there and have to leave my car running because it won’t start in the cold just to make you eat a snowball buddy!!

Used to live in Minnesota, on the Canadian border. Watched CBC out of Winnepeg and everything! It was like living in an icebox for 6 months of the year. -40 F and C. Its the same at that temp.

I'm working on the third. The stacked humbucker is raising some concern. I don't know if I have enough space on the bobbin to get enough winds. I'm reluctant to waste copper, if its not going to make it. I thought about using some 44 AWG, but not sure.

That’s been a fascinating thing for me to watch. Probably because I work on mechanical and electrical things for a living

Yeah! Its fun to do. I built the winder a couple years ago and want to upgrade it this Spring. Its cool to see the coding, woodwork and mechanics all come together. I'm thinking of documenting the winder version 2.0 and posting it with the code and parts list.

I’d definitely be interested in the mechanicals if not doing one myself

I think it was about $60-70 to build. Version 2.0 definitely won't start before the end of the WBO. I got enough going on! I still want to get to that Telecaster rebuild mentioned in the first post.

That seems in line with what Tim Sway said he spent building his winder. He talked about it in one of his recent videos.

I got some more coats of finish on the body. And . . . am waiting again before buffing. I think I put 7 coats on, but its a little blurry with all the VOC's. While waiting, I got the machine head ferrules in, took a little sanding as they were too tight. Then started looking at the actual machine heads. I gotta' deal with those tabs I talked about early on. Its like a credit card, sooner or later, you have to deal with the bill. Hoping to have that resolved before the sun comes up tomorrow. The tabs, not the credit card bill.

Okay! Solved the protruding tab problem. I cut some "gaskets" from walnut veneer on the laser. They are pretty good fit, although a hair thin. I think they'll work just fine. Here's what they look like.
