Winter Build Off 2023 - Acoustic/Electric Short Scale 5 String

I don't know what you Americans do wth your water fowl, and whether they consent, but here in Canada, we use such pressure sensitive adhesive products on our duct work.

Here in 'Merica, when our feathered waterfowl come apart, we tape 'em up. It fixes 'em good. Yup.
 
Knew a luthier that soldered just the male end of an instrument cable to a bass string and would use it to fish in output jacks. Stick the washer and nut on it, put it through the hole, insert into the jack, pull it through, tighten the nut using the fish to hold it for you, pull it out when you're done.


Kind of what I was going to say. I have a brass rod I soldered to an old 1/4” plug and ground on the plug for a while until it fit through the hole. Push the whole mess through the output jack hole, slip the jack over the plug and gently pull it back through. You should be able to slip the nut and washer over everything and start it. I have some hooked needle nose pliers I can reach in the jack with and hold one of the tabs while I tighten the nut. It takes a bit of finesse but it’s doable.

I don’t seem to have a picture on my phone but I can post one later if it will help.


Edit: snagged a picture from my thread. I eventually took the tape off to slide the mounting nut on.

This morning, I started by examining the brace pattern on my 4 string Ovation bass.

I sketched the brace pattern and laid it out on my top.

Then glued and clamped.

I ran out of deep throated clamps, so for the last two, I just laid a motor on top. It's pretty heavy, so I'm hoping it'll be enough pressure to securely glue those two braces. While waiting for that to cure, I did a little work on the headstock and volute.

I'll start shaping the neck pretty soon. Then I started working on my "jack fisher".

I took out the big soldering gun so I could heat up the hanger enough to solder it. I also ended up wrapping some stripped wire around the soldered area, and soldered that, for more strength.

I didn't do any work on the build today as it's Friday the 13th. I don't like to tempt fate. But, I did buy some more parts.

I got a 2x4 piece of plywood. I'll use that to make a frame to hold the body while I glue on the top, rout the roundover, and rout the neck pocket. I also got some aluminum angle iron (or is that angle aluminum?) to make the tailpiece. I have a piece of bar aluminum that I'll also use. And the 1/4" threaded rod, nuts, and washers, I got to replace the drum sander I seem to have misplaced. Once it's done, I'll probably find the old one.

Today I worked on the stand/support for routing the body roundover and neck pocket. First, I made a couple of cardboard templates to cradle the body.

Then, I cut the shapes out of the plywood, and assembled them.

Then I glued and clamped them.

After a half hour or so, I took off the clamps and test fitted the body.

It fits, and it's secure. Later today or tomorrow, I can paint the inside by the sound holes, and epoxy the top into place. Then will come the routing.
 
Is that a locating pin near the far right clamp? There's another idea that I need to steal.

Yes, I use toothpicks. There's another one at the bottom.

I find using registration pins extremely useful, especially when gluing things up. They hold the pieces in place, and they make it easier to position the pieces correctly. I use them also when I glue up fingerboards to the neck.
