Winter Build-Off 2023: Twin Tigers!!!

Here I’ve got a thin slice of maple veneer that I’ve hit with some spray shellac to act as a sealer before gluing up to the back of the headstock sandwich. Once this is done, I can finish up the headstock shaping, and then the real fun on the neck can begin!
The veneer is glued up and the headstock is ready for tuning machine holes and shaping.
The body has been rough sanded out ahead of neck pocket and pickup routing.
Tuning machines are drilled out and we can begin on headstock shaping next.
Can’t beat that for twins! This headstock is ready for final sanding, good to go.

The rest is routed out using my trusty yellow DeWalt.
An exciting day as this marks the first time the neck and body are mated together. This step is perhaps my absolute favorite part of the build process, as it transforms two blocks of wood into what actually feels like a musical instrument.
And this might just be my favorite lumber combination ever. Guess that’s why I built identical twins…

Neck shaping begins with a basic 1/2” roundover on the router, simply to knock down the hard edge and save a little elbow grease. I’ll do the rest by hand with my Shinto.
I’ve marked each side of the neck with a line 5mm parallel to the fingerboard. This will serve as my stopping point for the rough faceting work.

My favorite hand tool! Why did I even bother with hand planes ten years ago?!??
I absolutely LOVE my Shinto! I bought a set of dragon rasps to compliment it, but it's my go-to for neck shaping.
