(Those videos are intense, building something like that would be epic but there's only 1 guy in the world who'd know how to play it :roflmao:)

Winter Build Off 2020 – Air Space

For this year’s build off, we will be flying into the world of Air Space.

So, what is Air Space and how does it apply to this build off?

  • Air Space is a build that would be acoustic, semi-hollow, hollow, or chambered, in some nature or fashion.
  • Control, battery, and pickup cavities are not considered part of the air space.
To enter the build off, simply start a new thread using "Winter 2020 Build Off" as part of your title, and start building. In your initial post, provide a picture of your pile of dimensioned lumber with a tag with the saying "XXXXXXXXX" (Saying to be determined shortly before contest starts) somewhere in the pic. (Thanks @Reedt2000, again)

Here are our simple rules:

  • Dimensioned lumber includes the following: billets, neck blanks, matched tops, stringers, thin laminates, finger boards etc.
  • DO NOT cut or glue your dimensioned wood until the build off starts.
  • Pre-fabricated parts such as necks and bodies can be used. Please name the manufacturer when posting.
  • Any entrant that presents wood that is pre-sawn (other than original dimensioned lumber)and/or pre-glued, will be ridiculed mercilessly, tared, feathered, exiled to a foreign land, sent to bed without dinner, and stripped of all their wood
  • Minimum diameter for lowest pitch string is .084"
  • The build off will start Saturday December 21st, (This posting marks the start of the build off)
  • The build off will end on Friday, March 20th 2020 11:59pm GMT -6
Voting will start immediately after the close of the build off

I ask that you please put a link to your build back to this thread so we have a central reference point for all of those that wish to participate

I'm going to assume that we are not the only 2 people in this position. (yeah, I have a few as well)

My concern with this is where does the line get drawn? If we can laminate neck blanks, can we laminate body blanks as well.

For the sake of this particular build off, that might not be such a good idea because we want to see how people provide the airspace. If they laminate a top, we don't see that.

If we limit laminating to just neck, will this confuse people?

If allowing a neck that was made by someone (or some thing) in a factory elsewhere is okay, I don't see why using an older laminated blank for a neck isn't acceptable. We could certainly trust that the work was done by someone here in the past by taking their word. And it's not like they are using a whole neck they built a while back, if it's a blank it still needs a LOT of work.

Personally, I'd vote that using an old blank for a neck is okay.
(assuming it's laminated wood which hasn't had a truss rod or fingerboard installed)

I would tend to agree with this ^^
But then ... I can't play this year .... so don't mind me. :(:dead:.

I agree. I’m not actually asking for dispensation; I’m really just whining. I’ll play by the rules, whatever they may be!

The reason I posted was to vet out concerns. I think the point you raise is a good one. We have a few months to iron this stuff out.

So for example, we have rojo adding this commentary, which I tend to agree with as well.

After thinking about this for a while, the neck would be a bit better as it will be allowed to "stabilize" after gluing.
So, pre-glued neck blanks are in, unless there are objections
