Winter NAMM 2017 (ultra Pic-heavy)

Did I post this already? I checked the Michael Kelly 5-string to see if there was any neck-dive.

None.

Now that I'm back from NAMM, I'm wondering how they're selling them so cheap. Did anyone else check these out? I'm not trying to bag on them, but...I noticed that some of the cheap Chinese basses had a fake woodgrain top. I'm wondering if these do, too. If so, they're damn good, because I didn't notice. I hope that wonder is shown to be false, because these seem like a great value for the price.

And I found out about those lil' Voxes. Here's what I was told.

The owner of Vox is friends with a talented luthier in Japan. That luthier made these prototypes. At this time, there are no plans to produce these.

Nicole Rich, the bassist for [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. The band was hanging at the next booth over, a rock magazine was having celebrities running through there signing autographs. I first saw her when Remco was jamming, and she was just standing there with her jaw dropped wide open. She came back over, and I told her to hold the Model K, so she could see how light it really was. She was blown away, and fell in love with the mint green one.

So, here's the first pic, where Marco is trying to figure out how to use my camera.

Remco does a quick little jam, it's seriously about 1 minute long (so I could test the video on my camera).

And what happens! THE MAN GETS US DOWN! Too loud. Apparently, the Hammersmith booth has had enough warnings, so they get written up. YOU CAN'T KILL ROCK N' ROLL, NAMM!

Yep. Not sure if we ever got to the first written stage, but we had several unofficial verbals and at least one or two official ones. And then on Sat. we got one for being too busy during an artist showcase -- obstructing the aisle, fire hazard, yada yada. The crews in the booths around us were telling the Fun Police to chill though, because guess where spillover goes?

I remember, I think 3 years ago, Reverb had this tiny booth next to some string manufacturer.
I got a free T-shirt for saying I was a user. That site has just exploded (which is always a good thing for people, like me, with insatiable gas).

So, what was I doing on the main floor looking at the Wattplower instead of being upstairs and taking pictures of the rooms I had yet to visit? I didn't want to miss @TonyP- 's performance. I was early, so I had time to go around the corner to Reverend's booth and make it back in time for the exhibition at Mike Lull's booth. I was razzing Tony, telling him that I was missing a Remco jam to see him, so he better deliver. I realized later that could be taken the wrong way, so if it sounded offensive to you, Tony, please accept my apology.

To start, here was his setup.

And then, the man in action.

I have to say, Tony is my kind of player. He was really digging in, and you could tell that the little booth space was confining him. He was moving around in there, and really getting into his playing. He was a beast! He told me earlier about how often he changes his strings, because he get so sweaty playing, and I can see why. The best part was, as hard as he was playing, he had such great control, feel, and dynamics. If you have a chance to catch him playing somewhere, you absolutely don't want to miss it.

This has definitely been the best NAMM thread to date for vicarious kicks. Good coverage, focused pics, and a general sense of purpose. Many thanks to OP Wintremute and all others who contributed.

Yeah way to go @wintremute . You could have easily stuck to your own faves but you scrambled around the whole show hooking us up. Thanks again for the effort.

I told @MarkoYYZ that you were probably the single most effective (and cheapest) marketing campaign I had ever seen. No telling how many K basses alone he will sell off of this thread (including a 5 banger to me when that comes to fruition).

They had prices listed for every piece at the show and they had a ton of basses and guitars there. The price was listed right by the bass. I don't know how close the street price will be. I would've liked to play it but they had a steady flow of dealers in their display area.

Have they done a five string Artcore? I don't recall seeing one.

They do indeed have a five string Artcore bass, actually a few different models, too.

Those K's....man, the way they don't neck dive. They're so light. The custom color opportunities. Or maybe just straight wood like Jesse's. After everything I saw and touched and heard at NAMM, it's the K that I'm still thinking about. I'll be honest, I had serious doubts about those pickups. They just seemed too, I don't know, flimsy? to deliver. But I talked to Remco, and he liked them. I listened to Andy Irvine play through them, and then talked to him, and he said what I was hoping: if you want that late sixties muddy humbucker, these will deliver.

Lucky me, I get to play them tomorrow night here in Vegas!
