Well, what do ya' know. The Scarab on Ebay now is mine. Offered at $349. I pointed out the fact that on this one the aluminum control plate is mounted on the back, which IMO is a huge improvement in looks. And yes, most of them do have that weird looking plate on the front. Wish would really help himself out if he stopped using those things altogehter.
I wish I could remember. I think it was Boycote something or other (referring to Scarab pictured on previous page). I bought in on Ebay 7 or 8 months ago and never saved the listing. So I forgot.
But I do remember that he mentioned it was rare and that he had a very limited supply. Certainly one of the nicest looking woods I've ever seen on any bass, anywhere, at any price.

I went to MTU in Houghton.. At least The Soo has an expressway! I can't imagine doing the kind of driving today that I did back then to get to Da' Tech in the winter time. But I survived!
winters up here arent what they used to be, hell it was 45 and sunny on christmas this year, i cant recall that ever happening up here in my lifetime, i think it was dec or january maybe 10-15 years ago that we got over 5 feet of snow in one night and it kept snowing for a while after. School was cancelled for like 2 weeks
and the national guard was called in etc etc.
I've lived near Chicago for 25 years now and our winters are getting lighter too.
My Sophomore year at Tech ('78 - '79) gave us 390 inches of snow and a 100 day stretch where it snowed at least some every day. In fact, there was still snow in the snow dump when winter '79/80 started. Crazy stuff. Georgous part of the world though!!!

Bocote! Your bass inspired me to order a custom body shaped bass with a bocote body from wish, though the piece of wood most likely won't look like the rare sample that you have (but i still like the look of the wood in general). I'm probably 5 or so weeks away from getting it, I got a lot of custom options on it (rear mounted controls, ebony fingerboard, im using a hipshot bridge), i just hope the neck dimensions are true to what i spec'd- i have small hands and won't be able to play a 2 x 4 sized neck very well

With the fingerboard almost to the pickup, that bass would force the player to play directly over the pickup, almost to the bridge. It'd been nice if Wish had made the fingerboard just a inch or two shorter.

Yeah, but I guess it depends on how you play - I've never thought that you must play over the pickup. Just play where your hands feel right.
I thought about that issue (especially when I saw this one), and I think if I were to have another bass made, I'd ask him to do that. I really don't need a 3 octave fingerboard.
I have a fretted and a fretless and I thought the same thing. But most of the time I'm playing over the end of the fingerboard. It acts like a ramp and really helps improve speed. I rather like it. With no tone control you have to EQ at the amp, and that's OK with me, cause most of the time with my passive basses I just opened the tone control all the way. I find with my Wishbasses I'm moving my plucking zone around quite a bit for different songs. There is more than enough variation in tone to be had just by changing the plucking zone.
With the PUps so close to the bridge the basic 'straight out of the bass' sound is on the high side. I don't know much about electronics but its my understanding that this is where there are lots of overtones. So... I find that I have to roll the treble off a bit and up the bass on the amp. The tone responds very well and I can get a very clear full low end. I play my fretted bass nearly every weekend in a 60's R+B band and it really fits in great. Wish mails the basses with some medium gauge roundwounds that, to my ears, are really not so full. I switch them out for RotoSound Flats and I've been very happy with the sound.
Given the lack of trussrod, I suspect that the long fingerboard is a necessary structural component.
On that bass, I'm sure you're correct. But probably on a lobe... I could get away with it.

hey, I posted my lobe earlier in this thread...I sanded it all down to bare and fine sanded the crap out of it. It is ready for new finish, what I wondering is should I spray the fretboard with Poly too or should I tongue oil the whole bass. I really want to do one or the other, not both but if we all agree it would be better to do both, then I guess I should consider it.
