Wolf 5 String rebuild

Nice. I’ve been working on my car, a 2007. I have work truck so the car hasn’t been a priority but someone around the corner had about a ‘63 Falcon 2 door for sale. I thought, I only drive the dang thing once or twice a week, maybe. I should just buy the Flacon and drive that! Unfortunately, no money for the car parts at the moment so definitely no money for another car.

Okay back to this Wolf. A couple of Epiphones temporarily distracted me. Mounted the tuners so I can add strings and cut the slots in the nut. I was surprised how well the tuners fit into the holes. Just snug enough and zero slop. They look pretty smart against the Brown “Blackwood Tek” headstock overlay.

Had a chance to mount the pickups (inexpensive Artec brand and EMG sized if future upgrades are needed though I have found these to be quite good).

Next will be wiring in this simple (also inexpensive) three band preamp.

The original preamp was 18 volt but this one is 9volt. I’ll install the second battery holder to keep a spare in and/or allow for an 18 volt future upgrade (preamp allowing of course).

Installed both battery boxes wired in parallel for 9 volt. Can use one or two batteries. It’s okay as later the preamp can be upgraded to a 18 volt system if required. Some knobs turned up and once I find some lock washers I’ll get the preamp in. Nice touch is the control cavity is already shielded.

How’s she sound? How’s she play?

I know how she looks, though; She looks great!
She sounds and plays quite good. Still dialing in the setup as the strings and truss rod settle in. Solid low B and a lot of definition and sustain across the neck. No noticeable dead spots yet.. The Artec humbuckers are actually quite good and a no brainer for a budget rebuild.
