Wood Matters Club!!!

Wood matters. I am not sure about the little war you guys have going on though.

Oh... you need pics...

[pic 1]

Regardless whether I could hear the difference, damn, that's gorgeous. That's enough reason right there for wood to matter.

AAAAiiieeeiiieeeeaaeoiiaaaggh!!

Sorry :-)

Nice shirt, and greetz from an ex-pat of Monroe, the Swiss Cheese Capitol of the World and home of Cheese Days

LOL!!

I politely declined to play another rigged game in this very thread, and was attacked by him and his butt-boy CLinton for not playing!!!!

Of course, I won't go near that "Wood doesn't matter" thread. I have no burning desire to prove anything to anyone else, I know what I've experienced.

When one does not have any valid points to make in a debate one goes on the attack with name calling. Thanks for playing.

Doesn't offend me at all, it's just a useless logical fallacy - like a red herring, or "no true scotsman", or argumentum ad nauseam, etc.

It is, by definition, an appeal to authority.

Uh, it is NOT by definition an appeal to authority. Double check your critical thinking notes pal.

If all the people who decided to jump in this thread and piss on our parade are done now, that'd be great.

You might want to see post 194 for the perfect name calling response by Dan to a legitimate (and repeated) question for any info on his "test".
I'm still waiting for some substance from you or Dan or ulynch. I've posted a legitimate list of many of the things that will help us all validate the test protocol that Dan is so willing to hang his hat on. All I hear is crickets. No data, no info, no detail, no answers just speculation posed as fact.
Until there's a real test that isolates and accounts for the variables in his claim (the "claim" he keeps changing by the way, go back thru the thread and look for yourself) all I can do is discount his conclusions as predisposition and amature hour antics. I'd love to give the guy a break, I'm sure his heart is in the right place but his actions really send a mixed message.

Bottom line, is he's incorrect in his testing methods which led to incorrect conclusions and lacks the training and experience to realize it. The sad part is that when informed of those errors by those with the training and experience, he resorted to pettiness and snide remarks.

Absolutely true and absolutely a shame.:(
Even when others including myself have responded with our first hand (and equally non scientific) experiences hoping he can at least relate to those it results in complete disregard and odd remarks. I can understand how someone may not grasp the concepts of sound science but for that same person to not even grasp or accept the results of others using similar testing processes he's using is down right strange.
I'm really at a loss at this point. It almost appears that he really isn't trying to further an intelligent discussion as much as he's trying to stir a pot. Oh well, to each his own. A lot can be said for karma and reaping what you sow.:hmm:

The funny thing is I played for fifteen years, in some good, strong bands and got a lot of props on my bass playing. But all that time, even I didn't really know what great tone was, didn't have a highly developed ear, and didn't know anything a bout wood either.

That was when I got into producing and engineering, started recording and mixing, and went to recording school. Only then did I really learn how to listen! I would say that most of the wood doubters haven't learned how to listen yet.

Wow. This has got to have been a tough day on the mods with all the heated discussion on wood.

I haven't posted, but I think while wood does affect tone, its role is small compared to pickups and strings and the player.

But I have noticed differences between basses, strung with identical strings. The difference is most noticeable when the basses are unplugged which removes many of the factors that complicate things but also makes recording those differences more difficult.

what i find most interesting is that the wood doesn't matter advocates have been posting their (often snide) remarks in this thread, while the 'wood believers' have left the ' D A club wood doesn't matter' thread alone. to me that says alot about the non-believers.

Yep, noticed the same thing. Someone else on this thread said it well - "I believe wood matters like I believe in gravity". Personal experience and logic are all that's really needed to come to that conclusion. And if you still doubt gravity - some guy named Newton devised a series of experiments to prove it existed. Unfortunately in the wood matters discussion we have a few uneducated souls on the fringe of reality raving and ranting at the top of their lungs that wood makes no difference and assuming their antics will eventually sway those of us that have experienced otherwise just a it sways the uninformed masses.
Kind of reminds me of the Monty Python Holy Grail movie where the town folk claim they've caught a witch and their proof is that she turned one of them into a newt - he got better of course. And in steps the know it all (not unlike Dan) that offers a profoundly flawed test to see if she is in fact a witch.
Come to think of it, wasn't that test equating a witch to wood! Hey, maybe Dan is on to something here, a bass made of wood has no impact on tone, and we all basses weigh between 7 and 12 pounds, therefore if a woman is tone deaf she is in essence is equal to wood and will therefore weigh the same as an average bass, unless she's a witch, then she'll weigh more. Wonder if Dan tried that test yet?

While I have some impressive hack-fu, I'm absolutely sure there was no password required for r/w access to this thread. I'm off to read the guidelines sticky, but I'm pretty certain that what Dan has said here -- while unwelcome by some -- is perfectly on-topic.

Maybe I should have been more clear:

We dont come on your thread (wood doesnt matter) stepin on toes. We have a our beliefs and were over here, not stiring your pot, like some of you are over here.

His initial and follow up thread were the only two ive laid eyes on. I said my point in his thread and left him alone after that, until he came to this side of the fence.

And the pic of the 2x8 with pickups TAPED on (:rollno:) was good for a laugh.

Good point, and I agree with one major caveat: Basses are almost exclusively built with high strength, medium-weight woods. Yeah, alder, ash, maple and etc.. are all different species but they all have certain properties making them conducive to luthiery. They've gotta be workable, strong enough to resist the strings, stable enough to resist the weather, light enough to keep our backs ok (not always successful here!), and hopefully make a decent sound too. They will sound different from one another, although the differences are not always consistent, and depending on the coloration of the pickups may not be noticable. But you take a bass like MTD, Mike Tobias is trying to keep the electronics pretty clear so the wood is more noticable in the sound. Also, the A to B comparisons being bandied around with the same neck for both basses are pretty dumb too. I think the neck wood is extremely important for the sound. Modulus and Zons just don't sound or RESPOND the same as wood necked basses (to my ears-that-hear-what-they-want-to-hear at least...)

In short, I would say that neck AND body woods both affect the tone, as do strings, pickups, technique and etc..

Just my .02...

Exactly, my experience as well. The neck wood has a huge impact on the sound of the bass, more so than the body wood in my experience. And as you've correctly noted there are also many other things that impact the tone as well.

Not entirely true.

Not only snide, but immature as well.
Edit. I will not be posting in this thread anymore because you're right, it is rude to butt in where you're not wanted. Sorry.

Before some mod has to nuke this entire thing, I'd ask those of us who found Dan's tests educational or are on the opposite side of the fence from the Wood Matters guys to head to the other club for discussion. Debating is fun but this is getting hateful on several people's parts.

I'd like to see both threads stay open. Anyways, moral obligation as the organizer of the opposition fulfilled, I back out of your thread and leave you WM guys to your own devices. I've got a fretless with a four-piece Home Depot no-idea-what-this-is shelving wood body that needs some loving.

Yeah wood matters, the ebony fingerboard, maple body on my Pedulla MVP makes slap tone crazy, and I'm sure that the beautiful mahogany in my Fodera Monarch contribute to the singing tone.

Years ago, my son had a Cort Curbow, which had a plastic (luthite) body, it sounded sterile and modern...but wicked!

Curbow played by 14 Year Old, Live....

Are you still giving out numbers? I'd like a number. I guessed right on the "scrapwood" poll and I knew I guessed right before I knew I guessed right. (its not arrogance when you know you are right LMAO!).
The scrapwood word was a misnomer- pine is not scrapwood its simply too soft to make a lasting instrument out of, it won't hold up.

Not entirely true.

Dude, if you're gonna quote, use the whole quote and use it in context. It was a joke.

Plus, coming from one of THE main guys who rant and rave in the wood matters posts, I will graciously dismiss your opinion of what is and isn't immature.
