Worship Bass Pedalboards

I am doing some A/B testing between the JDI and the RNDI and I notice a big drop in volume level when adding and instrument cable to the 'thru' jack on the RNDI.

My setup is Peterson StroboStomp HD_-> Aquilar TLC compressor -> [JDI or RNDI] -> XLR out to my Yamaha MG10XU sound board.
I am monitoring the sound from the headphone jack on the sound board and listening through my Westone UM Pro 30 IEMs.

I had the 'level' (make up gain) on the TLC compressor set to noon. When using the JDI or RNDI with nothing plugged into the 'thru' jack on the DI, there is just a slight drop in volume when I kick on the compressor (which I would expect).

What I did not expect was if I plug in an instrument cable in the 'thru' jacks of the DIs and then engaged the compressor, I lost even more volume than before. (The instrument cable connected to my Tone Hammer 500 which was turned off at the time). When I tried the JDI, it was only a slight loss of volume with the compressor level still set to noon. When I tried the RNDI in this scenario, the volume drop was dramatic and I had to turn the compressor level to 4 o'clock to bring the level back to where the JDI was working.

I am sure this falls into the deeper realm of electronics/live sound that I don't understand. Can anyone shed some light on the subject for me?

I think I did read something about that somewhere, maybe in the manual, but that's not a situation I normally encounter.

The Arkham Oracle has two outputs so I *could* run a second line from there to an amp if needed.

Our church worship / service is posted online at [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and if you click on Live Streams and select the 3/29 11:00 service and have good speakers you can hear my pedalboard and hacking. I have never officially studied music. My mom majored in music and taught music. My daughter took piano and played/plays upright and of course can also sight read. As for me, I mostly play by ear, can read charts a little, and have not had much in the way of lessons, so for the most part am self taught.

There are three songs at the beginning, and one at the end. I was prepared to play three, and when I got there this morning found out they had made a change. So I had previously practiced two out of the four.

We did not have our normal Thursday evening rehearsal.

Squier VMP5 with Sadowsky Blue Label Flatwounds > tuner > Effectrode LA-1A > Arkham Oracle > RNDI > FOH

I did turn HPF on as it seemed boomy with it off. Also turned treble up to noon and hi switch on.

Again please excuse my poor skills ...

That's a really sweet sound coming from your rig - loved the sound of that setup:thumbsup:
Gonna add that to my "Dream board".
Will hold on to the SuperSymmetry for now, sell the AOU for an RNDI and see if I can get hold of an Oracle in a couple of months (or otherwise the SLO if shipping doesn't permit).

Thanks for that - it was refreshing :)

Thank you! It is definitely a dream board. I've had the SuperSymmetry, and also the Markbass Compressore, and other pedals, but no tube preamp pedal . I've played thru a Bassman silverface tube head and the Ampeg PF-20T, Fender TBP-1 and Sonic Farm 2di4, so I have an idea what a good tube amp sound is.

I'm pretty happy with where I'm at pedal wise.

Good luck in your search for tonal bliss!

Sounds beautiful. Nice playing! I was on the list for a P15 for awhile, but lost interest. Have also been interested in the Nuvision, which LBA apparently doesn't make anymore. You've got some nice unobtanium there. They sound very nice!
I've been in a happy spot with this set up since early January. I don't usually use the P15 for live stuff...just go straight out of the Nuvision into a passive DI, but for these broadcast services the P15 deserved to come out! If I am playing live in a full band situation I almost always also have a Hudson Broadcast pedal at the front of the chain...just didn't need it for this more "acoustic" vibe.

Compressor question. The LA-1A is killer with the Roscoe passive P. I'm still not convinced about it for the active Roscoe's. Not sure how to describe it but it just doesn't sound "right" to me. Seems like it should be awesome for all/any bass? Any suggestions?

My LA-1A sounds exceptional with both passive (Roscoe) and active (Sadowsky/Rob Allen) basses...

I don't have any basses with Bart's in them though—iirc, that's what you have in your active basses?

I do have Bart's in my active basses.

I tried it with my Roscoe's and it sounded lovely and warm but in a busy mix for me it was too much warmth with the Roscoe Barts. To me the Roscoe Barts doesn't need added warmth as they are inherently warm already. I prefer with the Roscoe basses in a busy mix my Union Compressor as it doesn't color the tone that much and let's the Roscoe baked in tone shine through.

I was thinking the same. The Roscoe P sounds great alone, but there's no denying how much better it is with the LA-1A. I will always have that combo. My active basses sound great as they are, but I think having some compression really helps us all hear better - especially in our IEM's - and I like that the B string is tamed down a bit so I don't have to worry about it being overpowering. I hate to have 2 (probably equally expensive as I am now spoiled by the LA-1A) compressors on a board but would an Empress or Cali be better for my active Bart Roscoes?

Have you tried adjusting the Knee, Attack, and Dynamic EQ controls? Try a very slow attack and soft knee (all the way counter clockwise). Also try the Dynamic EQ switch in the downward position to add subtle brightening to compensate for the darker Barts.

The high output and darker bart soapbars are going to react differently than a single P.

I think I have that switch down already. I'll double check.
I have the attack and knee at about 10-11 o'clock right now for the P. I'll give it a try. For sure the basses will react differently.
