No, that'd be perfect for metal. Metallica wouldn't have had to use any effort at all to bury Cliff Burton in the mix if they just gave him a bass that didn't make any sound in the first place.

Really?? And Jason Newsted doesn't count. I'm not a Metal player but am aware that he did have a black Élan.

Interestingly, I have seen a lot of metal bassists play Alembics. I agree that they're not a good fit, sound-wise (and the look isn't there, either).
I think it's like buying that ridiculous Bentley that they're never gonna drive, just because they could afford it. Why else would you drop $6000 on a bass that doesn't fit the sound?

While I agree that the bass is in the forefront of quite a few metal bands, your idea that a band isn't a band with a bassist is off. I can think of fantastic bands/ensembles in every genre that do not use a bassist.
