I would agree with you that it's not the most versatile thing. The way I use it, it's a tool to take a typical passive bass pickup's output, and allow you to add the things that you need to sound better in a modern rock mix - more bass, a little presence, some drive and compression. It's a well-made tool for that job, hence its generally good rep.
I've not really had problems with it being muddy or ice-picky, although it does have a wide range of control. What bass were you using it with?
EHX Steel Leather. Claims it's a "bass expander" all it did was boost the high into a harsh, cranky sound.
There's your problem right there - most multis are sh1t.

T-Rex the sweeper bass chorus I just don't like it. For me it sounds like it doesn't keep the fundamental tone of the bass, it alter it and adds the chorus effect to it as to me it should simply add the chorus effect to your original tone.
