Generally, public punishment is used due to the belief that a public exposure of the action's consequences would act as a deterrent of potential offenders.
Furthermore, public punishment is usually accompanied by some form of humiliation or ridicule of the offender (as was the case in Roman times, for instance), as an act of public rejection of the offender's action, so as to enstrengthen society's moral norms.
I was on about circumcision. Sure, it'd hurt, but not enough to deter people, surely?
Devil's advocate...there are plenty of people who don't think that death as a punishment is always a bad thing.
Good luck on that not getting political or religious, though...

I guess it is inherent in some cultures.

A couple of hundred years ago we did the same.
With that statement I didn't judged if it was a good thing or bad thing, but the statement is true.
As my opinion on it: I think it's a bad thing.
Edit: the topic of discussion is not if death sentence is a good or bad thing, but if you will allow your child to watch it.
I guess there are people that support death sentence, but at the same time they think it's wrong to let their child witness an execution.
(Note, I did not turned the discussion over to death penalties. You do.

I know, that's why I didn't elaborate on the issue of death sentences.

This could work! If they were executing an individual by electrocution or burning, you could have them hold onto a 5lb package of bacon while they were "In Process". Jiffy Pop would be a good idea too!
Have a couple a beers while you wait for the execution, and snacks after.

Or do you mean female circumcision, which is cruelty to women. This kind has no medical point, but is just plain cruelty IMO. And it's performed not as punishment.

A friend of mine once fooled with me with an execution video.He brought up his cell phone and said "hey watch this".It was a very short video.Any time some one touched my neck,I screamed and jumped for a month.And I felt terrible -remembering- writing this.
What better way to teach a child about ethics than to let them witness what happens to the unethical? And at the same time you could raise the issue of how punishing someone with death might be unethical.
There aren't many offenses these days that warrant the death penalty. For the few that are, the death penalty could be a fitting punishment.

Its a dificult idea to comprehend - the who of who is to judge and who it to act on that judgment but it has been set up in the most reasonable fassion i suppose, with the people acting as both judge and exocutioner. Its up to us to change it if we want a change, I dont. I want more.
Here is an interesting fact - It costs $48,000 to keep one inmate locked up for a YEAR!!! in CA, thats more than I make. and thats 2 times the cost of sending one student to a university!

So yeah I would take my kids to see it. Their made public in other countries.

Probably not very much, but that has very little relationship with the cost of implmenting the death penalty, if that's what you are hinting at.
that depends entirely upon your conception of what it takes to kill some one.
A gaurd, a gunman, a ditch, and some one to use a shovel.
some paperwork... which I can see being the expensive part, but like I said we are in control so why not make it less of a hastle to do?
