Humans will integrate technology more and more. It will shift from supplemental tech that allows humans to maintain "humanity" (pacemakers, hearing aids, corneal implants, etc.) to stuff that extends us beyond "humanity."

I have a big red button on my back that allows me to lift a plastic model engine.
I don't get what the magnet or chip does once it's in the body that it can't do outside the body.

Actually I totally agree - that is if certain *cough*organizations don't try to put a stop to it because they think it's against *cough* "nature" to do so. That aside, the article is an encouraging sign of transhumanism on the rise. It's just too bad that right now you have to go to certain tattoo parlors to get the procedures done without anesthesia.
I was thinking about the magnetic finger thing earlier and decided that although it would be really cool to be able to sense magnetic fields, that very ability might make it uncomfortable to work in electrical boxes. I wire a lot of relays and dealing with a box of them pinging my fingertips every time one of them switches on might suck. I'm usually pretty close when I'm clicking relays to check my wiring. Then there's the big ass transformer up top to really buzz my fingers when they get close. It would be rather distracting.
OK I can see how for ID/Passport this could be relevant, you wouldn't have to carry one or worry about loosing it. But it reeks too much of big brother.

I don't see any of the current tech available to be worth the pain and healing, not to mention the risk of infection, but then again I've also had ink injected under my skin in artistic approximations of prehistoric aquatic life, so I'm not really in a place to question them.
I'm on board as soon as the tech becomes more valuable to my daily existence and more modular.
Good point. Speaking of infection (as well as utility), it seems to me that while we are moving more toward machines, the machines should also move toward us. Biological machines grown in vats and whatnot. If the device is based on your DNA, your body would treat it like one of its own parts, once implanted.

There's a lot of growth available in terms of augmenting humans. Imagine if the ideas and tech we had today for smartphones were limited to the guys working in vacuum tube filled rooms uploading programming via punch cards.

Pioneers get scalped more frequently than the people who stay behind, it's the nature of all progress.
I know that's the topic. But I was thinking ahead that using this on a large scale for strictly ID purposes only would be interesting in a way."Big Brother" isn't putting the implants in people. This is about voluntary body mods.
At that point would inevitably involve the govt. Then there could be ability to track everyone's whereabouts and who knows what else, etc. hence "Big Brother".
Might make a good premise for a sci-fi movie. Stealing one's identity by removing their chip & implanting to another person. Or like in the Matrix where they upload knowledge, like martial arts to the brain in a matter of seconds. Or have knowledge deleted or uninstalled. Now that's scary!
