Humans will integrate technology more and more. It will shift from supplemental tech that allows humans to maintain "humanity" (pacemakers, hearing aids, corneal implants, etc.) to stuff that extends us beyond "humanity."

I know that's the topic. But I was thinking ahead that using this on a large scale for strictly ID purposes only would be interesting in a way.

At that point would inevitably involve the govt. Then there could be ability to track everyone's whereabouts and who knows what else, etc. hence "Big Brother".

Might make a good premise for a sci-fi movie. Stealing one's identity by removing their chip & implanting to another person. Or like in the Matrix where they upload knowledge, like martial arts to the brain in a matter of seconds. Or have knowledge deleted or uninstalled. Now that's scary!

They've had a few shows and films that've dealt with the ability access information instantly.

As for government tracking you, that cat's long been out of the bag. Your phone you carry with you is a tracking device. Your bank card tells them where you shop. Your internet tells them what you believe and who you're friends with.

You don't need to worry about Big Brother, all the medium brothers already have done the work.

I hope that's not intended to make me want to get it done.

I'm not sold yet either, but I'm open minded once it develops.

When I finally "came around" to realizing that our government really does seem to be pushing for a police state, total control. I thought, when the time comes to try and track the populace with implants, etc, surely the masses will finally wake up and fight it. They'll finally get their heads out of the sand and maybe it won't be too late. Right? Instead, they're signing up early.

They will sell you/us on "Services" - be more, see more, have more. The article in the OP mentioned a builder finding studs with a magnet in their finger - sure, that will work for steel studs, and yeah you could find the drywall screws or nails. But I really like my new dual function "Studsensor" at $9.99 - magnetic and ultrasonic. I don't want a magnet in my finger, I have enough to do keeping track of the senses I was blessed with at birth.

I'm concerned that with more artificial assistance fewer people will examine the great abilities they already have. Few things are as sweet as succeeding when success is not guaranteed. imho.

I would pro-offer that reducing fractions introduces computational errors. In this case the maths is people.

Why am I not surprised this has turned into a government paranoia thread? Like Unrep said, my phone, bank card, internet service, Northstar System, and "loyalty card" for the grocery store are all already keeping me pinpointed and profiled. You guys watch too many movies. You overlook the mundane and suspect the over-the-top.

As for a handheld studfinder being better than a magnetic fingertip, that's true, but I think the point is to experience a new sense. Magnetic fields all of a sudden become something you can feel. Of course, I wouldn't do that because as I mentioned before, working with electrical circuits might be distressing. And I don't buy the whole idea that we're already perfect the way we are. First of all, "perfect" is a construct that doesn't even exist and secondly that sort of thinking blocks progress. Don't be a Luddite.

I think the most creative people would run out of ideas actual uses for implanted magnets. Attach your iPod to you arm without a strap? A watch without a band? Jewelry in non-conventional location on the body?

I can't imagine why most people would have any desire to feel the pull of a magnetic field under their skin.

Why do I suspect that the same people who are "guns don't kill people, people kill people" are the same ones who aren't nearly as optimistic about the lack of inherent evil in technology?

I'm not sure I agree with your presumption. I think you can support technology while still supporting privacy in its implementation. I don't see it as an equalizing tool, I see it as simply a tool.
