Wow... Golf...

I think Mark Twain said golf is "a good walk ruined". and my mom always used to say "golf if hours of frustration interrupted by moments of sheer brilliance". Either way, I love it. hmm, now where to make a tee time for tomorrow.

My embarrasing golf story...
Teeing off on the 1st hole. Bunch of people standing around waiting as it was quite a busy day.
I completly whiff on my swing, just grazing the top of the ball, which shoots straight at the tee block, rebounds, and drills me right in the...golf bag. :help: :bawl:

Nice.

Bwaahahaha! :D

I have played all my life, but this year I went out and started to buy my own clubs, and play on a more regular basis. I love playing, and even though this might sound boring I love playing alone at 7am. 18 holes all to yourself usually no oneis behind me and I get all the time in the world to myself.

I am curious to see how I match up to some of the guys/girls on here with my handicap. So please I would like to see what your handicap is if you have one figured out. Mine is 19.6.

I'm with you on that one. I like getting out there early and having the course to myself.

My handicap? Most days, it's chipping. Sometimes, tee shots. :D
Seriously, though, I haven't established a USGA handicap. I know this could hurt me down the line, but I don't really believe in the system. I count all my shots. If I make a 10 on a par-4 hole, it's a 10. I hate it when someone says, "The maximum I can get on a par-4 is 8." As far as I'm concerned, you get what you got!
My best score on a par-72 course is 86.

I have not registered my USGA handicap yet, but will eb this week hopefully. I do not go by the 8 is the most I can write on a hole. If I shoot a 12 on a 5 my score card will say the same. The place I get my handicap from right now is lastminutegolfer.com It also has some really good deals on courses that usually in the $85+ a round to about $50-60 for the round.

Woo! I'm going golfing for the first time in almost five years tomorrow.

Any advice for someone sorely out of practice?
Like FreeSpirit said.. be patient. Make sure you're relaxed before you swing. Keep your left arm straight, take the club back low and slow, and don't pick your head up until the ball is in the air. And, of course, have fun! Like the bumper sticker says, the worst day golfing is better than the best day working.

Remember, bogey golf is great golf. Bogey every hole and that's only 18 over par!
Exactly!! Great piece of wisdom right there.
My whole approach to the game changed after my uncle gave me a similar tip a couple of years ago. He asked me what my goal was with golf, and I told him, "I really want to break 100." His response was, "That's the wrong approach. Instead of trying to break 100, try to make no worse than double bogey on any hole." The light bulb went on right then and there.. you don't play 18 holes all at once. It's one shot at a time, one hole at a time. Since then, I've been under 100 almost every time out and I recently broke 90 for the first time.

You reminded me of another piece of golf zen. Something like 80% of all golfers never break 100! If you figure that double-bogey golf gets you to 108 it takes a lot of the pressure off of thinking you have to shoot for birdie or par on every hole.

Of course, many golfers "adjust their handicap" to look better than they really are. Piece of foolishness there if you ask me. When I played regularly people would tell me I should record a lower handicap to get into a better flight of players. Duh! In the flight I played in I often won skins if not the round and sometimes I won all of the skins! I was in the right flight for me. I didn't win all of the time but I was usually in the hunt. Handicaps are meant to level the playing field, not appeal to our ego.

There was one golfer who would play me head-to-head twice a season. He was a scratch golfer and the one person who would only play head-to-head. His reason was that he had to give everyone too many strokes so he could never win unless we used gross scores. Yes, he always beat me, but he didn't crush me. He could make the right shots at the right time to keep just a bit more pressure on me than I could handle. Those rounds seriously improved my mental game, though.

It's fun to think about those days. My wife doesn't miss them at all.

Just started playing 2 years ago. I went from averaging..wait.here it comes.....125-130 OUCH to now shooting anywhere from 95-105. Just shot a 94 two days ago. Finished with a birdy, two pars, lots of bogeys and some doubles and the others well oh well.

Heres my golf story: A couple of months ago I went as a single and got paired up with a threesome. 3 ladies, all over 60. I'm thinking heree weee go. We get up to the first tee box, they each drive the ball about 200 yards combined. Once again I'm thinking, oh god. As it turns out they never hit the ball over 150 yards, but never messed up either. In the end they kicked the living **** out of me, by playing excelent short game all the way up the fairway. It just proves that accuracy over distance is a great thing.
