Wow! Prices sure jumped!!

Geez. I wrote about this like a month ago...all I got was crickets.
From a Canadian's perspective, MarkBass cabs were always more expensive than GK. I cannot claim to have compared them but from anecdotal readings on this site, MarkBass are a bit of hit and miss for players. I can't recall reading a lot of negatives about GKs cabs. Along with the cost of re-tooling a factory, it wouldn't surprise me if GK felt they were leaving money on the table for their higher end (Neo) cab offerings. With the old prices, it was a no-brainer between Traynor and GK, I would spring for the difference. Now it's about $400 more for a 1x15. I would definitely take the time to compare.

Our sound tech keeps telling me that I don’t need an amp, just a DI.

I keep telling him that I sign his checks, so he should shut up.

Exactly! I'm a selfish guy... I want to hear myself on stage, through my rig, exactly as I want to hear myself. If I don't hear my bass, my tone, etc. I'm not having fun and fun is the only reason I play bass these days! In the past, when relying on monitors, I've had it happen several times that there's an issue and all of a sudden I don't hear myself anymore. Never again.
That said, I understand some folks in busy metropolitan areas might take the subway to a gig, so I get that they rely on a quality DI. I don't live in an area like that though, so I have the luxury of opting out of gigs like that.

I've played exactly 1 gig where the stage wash was perfect with the bass mixed in where I could actually turn my amp down. I've played many other gigs with bass in the monitors and it sounded awful. Mids and clank only. I tell them to take the bass out of my monitor. I'll use my rig, thank you.

I had a gig where my GK amp was shutting down as there was wire loose on one of my cabs (not GKs fault, due to my own ignorance on equing my bass, I had replaced the Paragon speaker with a more robust speaker but my tech did not solder the wire to the speaker). I should have tested the other cabinet but was worried my amp was failing. The sound dude reluctantly gave me some bass through the monitors but it was all high-mids and no warmth. Ruined what was supposed to be a gig with my new rig (GK Neo 210 atop the GK Neo 115iii)

Hi
I think some people get caught up in if something costs more it must be better.
That is not always the case...

Personally I never heard one of these fearfull boxes I liked...Not enough to switch.

Judge based of the features you need and most importantly ‘Your Ears”.

I prefer the CX410 over any other 410 even the NEO410 and it’s all about the sound.
As long as the power handing is ok. ;)

the insinuation was that there's some meme about it being a guaranteed fail. That has always been shouted down and never even been said in a long long while. Doesn't stop the mixed cab police police.

When you have a steady chorus of largely uninformed folks flat out saying "Don't do it" they are clearly not leaving wiggle room. Why not... ?

And maybe, just maybe you don't see every incident. I saw it again recently, it is not just a thing of the past.
:D

There are also threads questioning this conventional wisdom, still.

Oh dang, don't get me going with Brad...it'll last for days :D

Was it the part about cramming 2200 watts worth of bass in a single 12" or something or the part about mixing cab sizes. Still a big proponent of playing it safe and not mixing cabs sizes, especially if you don't know if the cabs are made to sound good paired up, but Brad's definitely right that it's not a guaranteed fail by any means.

In this case he's referring to a smallish single cab with two tens and a fifteen. The power figure is for that, not a 112. I've seen pics of the model, no direct experience with it. In situations like that I won't definitively state what it can or can't do.

Personally when I know my guess could easily be wrong... I don't state it. But that's me. Anyway, I'm more than used to folks offering their guesses as counterpoints to experience.
:D

It was two10 inch drivers one 15 inch driver 5.6 cubic feet of approximate volume and 2200 Watts.

Go!:D

That's 1100 decibels in dog years.

Agreed better is better.

I have never subscribed to perception is reality. Reality is reality!
