I just wondered what kind of string preference people had on their Attitude? When I got mine in March I started with a set of standard Rotosounds 45 through 105. They were the only Rotosounds I could get at the time. I'm sending my Attitude in for a full set up in a couple of weeks with a luthier and I'll be providing him with a set of Billy Sheehan Signature Rotosounds.

The reason I ask people's preference, is because I found that I didn't get very long out of the Rotosound strings. They were really zingy to start off with, and although it took a little getting used to them I really loved the bite from them. I am really curious to see how the Attitude feels with the .43 and the 110 instead of .45 and 105. I've read on another forum that for whatever reason the Elixir strings don't suit the dynamic of the Attitude. Have you guys got any advice on other string choice? Are there other strings you guys would recommend and are there string brands you guys would advise to avoid?

I know it's entirely a personal thing with several variables that play a factor in choice, but given that we all have this bass in common I'd love to hear people's opinions.

Yes... the Attitude Custom has a slimmer neck profile. It has the same 1 3/4" nut width, but a shallower D-shape profile than the first generation Limited. I owned a stock blue metallic Attitude Custom which I sold to a TBer in France. I still have a one of a kind light violet metallic Attitude Custom that has a first generation Limited neck with the red bullet inlays and scallops.

The Custom neck joint is identical to the first generation Limited of the same era. It uses an aircraft aluminum plate which bolts to the wooden neck. The aluminum plate is then clamped to the body with screws that are secured through threaded metal plates.

Yes... a Custom with the Limited neck makes for a very cool and unique Attitude.

I'm something of an Attitude-A-Holic having owned 10 Limiteds, 2 Customs, 2 Standards, and 1 Standard 5 string.

All of the LTDs have felt neck heavy, although none of them have had necks that dive to the floor... they generally hang at a shallow upward angle.

The stock tuning machines are extremely heavy. I shaved 10 ounces off the headstock of my current Custom with the LTD neck by replacing the stock Limited tuners with Hipshot 1/2" Ultralites (no D-Tuner). It dramatically improved the balance and reduced the neck heavy feel tugging at my shoulder. it now weighs 9 lb 2 oz.

My completely stock LTD2 10th Anniversary is the lightest Limited I have owned at 8 lb 15 oz, and I'm tempted to put Hipshot Ultralights on it, too.

The original tuners have a huge footprint and will cover the new single hole required to mount the Ultralites.

Hi again WW, I've always used the Sheehan signature set with mine as those are the strings that are 'meant' to be on the bass, of course other people will use different makes, gauges etc. Personally I love how the Attitude sounds and plays with the Sheehan rotos on. Tone-wise this set up is very versatile as I'm not going for a Sheehanesque tone as it just isn't practical for me.

Rotosounds do have a bit of a bad rep for loosing their 'zinginess' pretty quickly but I've found that if you wipe off the strings after playing and apply Fastfret straight after, it gives the strings a much longer lifespan.

I've been trying different types. I like the Rotos because they're cheap, easy-to-find, and well-balanced. They don't last very long, but I'm not too concerned at just $19 per set.

The DR Jonas Hellborg signature strings were interesting. Designed to have a stronger fundamental relative to overtones. I don't know that they succeeded, but there was something cool about them. Maybe it's my imagination, but they did seem to tighten up the woofer pickup a bit.

Flatwounds and tapewounds (especially LaBella Deep Talkin' Bass) are always a good match for what is essentially a P-Bass. Nice and thunky.

I find D'addario nickel-wounds to be a great "general puropose" string. Nice midrange punch and not too bright on the top end.

I'm also a fan of DR Sunbeams: round cores with pure nickel wraps. They have nice midrange articulation. Slinky feel for those who play with a lighter tough. And they last FOREVER.

Does anyone have experience with an Attitude Special? I'd like to know how the neck shape (width and depth) compares to the LTD II and LTD3 models. Is it the same, or is it like the other lower priced variants (same width, but skinnier front to back)? Thanks in advance.

Exactly like you said...

First of all it's poly coated instead of satin finished. Then it's bolt on with four screws and a chrome neck heel plate (let's say the traditional Fender way) and, after all, it resembles former Bb414/714 shape n'specs

Does anyone know, or have the time to measure, the neck width at the nut and 21st fret and the depth at the 1st and 12th frets? I know I measured the neck on my LTD II when I had it, but I don't know where I wrote it down. :S

does anyone have any audio of an LTD 2 or 3 playing more "regular" p-bass stuff?

all the audio samples i can find are pretty horrific. i'm a fan of billy's, but i'm primarily a jazz player, with lots of funk / pop / hiphop/ ext other types of gigs. these basses always look so useful to me. but i've only played one once, and can't ever find audio that isint overdriven with wild 3 finger technique runs and all that - which i do like - but how can this do regular fingerstyle, playing over the pickups, for say, a motown groove?

anyone have audio? i'd really love to hear. i would immagine actually using the dual output would really make a difference in the sound. billys design concepts make a lot of sence.
