Yamaha Attitude Club

does anyone have any audio of an LTD 2 or 3 playing more "regular" p-bass stuff?

all the audio samples i can find are pretty horrific. i'm a fan of billy's, but i'm primarily a jazz player, with lots of funk / pop / hiphop/ ext other types of gigs. these basses always look so useful to me. but i've only played one once, and can't ever find audio that isint overdriven with wild 3 finger technique runs and all that - which i do like - but how can this do regular fingerstyle, playing over the pickups, for say, a motown groove?

anyone have audio? i'd really love to hear. i would immagine actually using the dual output would really make a difference in the sound. billys design concepts make a lot of sence.

Well, here's an utterly tasteless example of how the Attitude LTD 3 sounds when playing a boogie bass line with the neck pickup. The tone is set to max, which actually gives it an OK harmonic content. I think I had some P-pickup in there as well. But no distortion :)

that short little video sold me a lot harder on these than any of the other youtube "billy clone" demos. that sounds great, from what we can tell from the phone (?) audio.

thanks!

anyone else have non-billy inspired audio of his sig basses?

Thanks (I guess ;) :) )!

I'll try and record a few snippets this weekend or so - I haven't had any time to try it out with my rig/pedalboard yet, so it'll be interesting to see for me as well.
Just by playing the bass straight into my computer and using some presets in Logic, I think that it's safe to say that it is NOT a one trick pony. Quite the opposite, to be honest with You! Lots of tone shaping available within the bass, just by blending the pickups and using the tone knob for the woofer pickup :)
I'll get back to You with some examples, hopefully this weekend :)

that'd be cool.. i mean.. it really is at the end of the day just a beefed up P-bass, and the dual output thing can make a lot of cool things happen.

while i do maintain that my interest in these basses has nothing to do with being a fan of billy, i do like from what i've seen in his rig rundown videos that he's using a crossover (really just a high pass filter?) for his p-pickup, and cutting everything under 250hz or so. i think when using dual rigs, doing that makes the woofer pickup concept a lot more useful and musical.

on its own, its just quality wood with a quality p pickup in the right spot and high end fit and finish. i don't see why more cats aren't using them.

i'd love to have one modded for a p pickup tone (maybe stacked with the volume?) and a tighter string spacing - at least at the nut it's an easy fix.

can anyone confirm what the nut width and string spacings are on the LTD 3?

i fear it's going to be too much for me to adjust to. i play 6 strings with tight spacing normally. i can play a 4 string jazz bass pretty much no problem. but, i seem to recall being annoyed at the wide spacing the one time, nearly a year ago, when i did play an LTD 3.

All LTD's have BIG nuts :D ... and the balls to match

The LTD3 is a 1-3/4" nut with .750 (19mm) bridge string spacing... as is the original LTD and the LTD2.

As promised - Here's the video! :)

Hope that it's somewhat helpful!

yamaha should pay you for posting that video!

did a lot more to showcase the tone than anything else out there. great sounding bass. that p pickup with the tone open is pretty damn agressive, it definitely has some billy in there no matter what.

i want one, and love how they sound, but fear that the string spacing and nut width would be way too much to adjust too. i wonder if i could get one and have a new nut and bridge installed? if i did, and it worked, i'd definitely play it a lot. may be tricky fitting a different bridge in the countersunk placement, and i wonder if the neck would feel too weird if i replaced the nut.

i guess if i get a good enough deal on a used one it's worth a shot.. we'll see.

either way thats a great sounding bass.

edit- i wonder, rather than try to mod out one to fit me, would it be wise to buy another 4 string bass and have a woofer pickup of my choice installed? i wonder if anyone could instal a 2nd pickup on a normal p bass with 2 outputs but also wire in a push/pull stereo/mono?

but then i wouldn't get all the other rad features of the attitude. hm. i'll have to think about it.

Thank you so much! Glad I could be of service, so to speak :)

Hope to You come to a decision regarding the string spacing and what not :)

next question for y'all -

i've got myself a lovely seafoam green LTD 2 now. anyone else notice a huge volume difference between the front woofer and P pickup?

i've got the P-pickup pretty close to the string, but not as close as i would normally put it (right under the string, ramp-like). the woofer i've put some foam under it to raise it up to right under the string. i'm still noticing a fair volume difference between the two - the p pickup being louder - but would like to actually raise it closer to the string.

theres no trip pot or anything of that sort in here, so how do you guys compensate? running in mono, never using both pickups at the same time, always switching from one to the other.

First: congratulations on getting an Attitude!

I have the LTD3, which has a different neck pickup (made by Yamaha themselves) and I haven't experienced the difference in volume at all. With that being said, I do run the bass in stereo most of the time (when not doing the so called "Willis Hack" with the EBS Sheehan Signature Drive) and I do treat the two signals differently in terms of EQ. Have You checked out the Attitude LTD-Facebook page? I'm sure that You'll get your answer there in a heartbeat!

i have not - i am, believe it or not, without facebook.

it seems a little better now that i've got both pickups close to the strings- i've been playing it like that, and when using the p-pickup i back it off just a touch, that way my levels are more even, and i've also got a little extra headroom for when i need it - it also takes some of the edge off of the "no tone" p-bass sound which i kind of like.

but, if anyone else hears a difference on their LTD 2, let me know!

Hi, found this post courtesy of achisland's post in the FB group.

I have the same 'issue' as you as I run my P pickup quite close to the strings and use them as a ramp. I used to run the bass in 'stereo' using a boss LS2 to balance the two signals, but lately, I've been using it in single output mode, mainly just the P pickup only as it suits my band's needs better.

The problem, so to speak, is that the will power P pickup is just so darn powerful. Run it close to the strings and it could possibly melt the sun, it's so powerful. I also have the same issue on my backup bass, a PJ configured Attitude Standard. I replaced the 'meh' stock pickups with the Will Power and chose a Dimarzio Ultra J for the bridge - the most powerful Jazz pickup I could find. The Will Power still vastly overpowers it if I have the pickup height set where I want it.

It seems Billy Sheehan puts a thick layer of epoxy on his pickup covers, which allows the coils themselves to be set lower whilst retaining the physical height - pretty much making for an extra thick pickup cover. I personally don't have the confidence to do this myself, and it's pretty much irriversable, so I'm thinking about getting some pickguard material cut to the size of the P pickups and sticking on with double sided tape. This should allow me to set them lower into the body whilst retaining the height.
