You know you're a bassist when...

An Ox is something you want to be like.

People ask you if you're feeling ill because you go around "groaning" and "grunting" all day.

Dance to the Music has to be cranked up at "that" part of the song.

You carry sandpaper and routinely sand your fingertips.

You DON'T air guitar to every Metallica song.

You have to teach your lead player the songs he taught you last week.

You hang out with drummers more than guitarists.

You're the one with the shaved head instead of a waist long pony tail.

You can play any style, any song, anywhere, whether you like it or not.

You're the one relaxing, talking to the chicks while everyone else is still setting up.

You know for a fact you're the only 'real' pro in the band, but never admit it.

you know when you are a bass guitarist when.......... you own a bass guitar and an amp. :hmm:
I don't know about that - I have a friend with a Peavey Foundation and a Johnson amp. Quote from my youth pastor, who is not a very good singer BTW, to my friend:
"You're seriously asking to play bass? I am a better singer than you are a bassist. Hitler was a better humanitarian than you are a bassist!"
Sadly, he's right.

I just thought this was funny, so I put it here.

Rob Trujillo can have my bab... errrr... he's sweet!

I would say that the waist long hair thing is a no go however. Cliff Burton (maybe the best Metal Bassist EVAR!!!!!11) has waist long hair and made up his own style (wind-mill) of swinging it.

:ninja:

This is in responce to many people here. That have made a comment on the calices bass players get. Like it is somehow greater or bigger than the calices on a guitar players hands.
I play for hours a day. And have been playing for 4 years like this. The only calices I have are on my index finger and middle finger on my left hand(fretting hand) And I bought a guitar say.... 2 years ago. And put .11's on it. My fingers were ripped to shreds the following couple of days. Now I do not use the guitar anymore really so those calices never really got a chance to develop. Sorry just sick of the myth of huge strings mean bigger calices.

You know your a bassist when:
1)Asked about what your uncle should name his wifes child to be, you suggest Warwick, Rick, Sadowsky, Tobias, and Jaco, without even thinking about it.
2) You like jazz for jazz, not to try and be cool.
3) You routinely check bass manufacturers website to drool over new gear(btw check the warwick site for the double buck and special..its crazy).
4) When having a bad day, you go downstairs, turn the lights off, hit a lava lamp on, turn your bass amp loud and jam for hours.

You tell everyone about how theres something wrong with your nut because it keeps breaking your g-string and no one thinks anything of it anymore.

You dont feel really lonely when youre getting really low action

you know how to fit your upright into a volkswagon beatle

you can get a girl off with out even touching her thanks to your new 18inch cab

when your guitar players amp dies in the middle of a gig, you can play your part and his part simoltaneously

you find yourself watching vanessa williams on the view....

when your girlfriend can say "I cant get my little hands around it, its too big" in front of your mother and get away with it. (a 5 string spector neck will do that)

As a female bassist that is absolutely hilarious!!! I play Spectors and love trying to get my tiny little hands around the big fat neck! You should see the 5-string I built, the spacing at the nut is like 2 1/2" at least! Wish I had some funnies but not really a funny person...sorry :hmm:

The bass has been a work in progress for almost a year now. I really do need to make the neck slimmer. I thought if I made the neck really bulky and wide, then I could get really fast when playing a skinnier neck, but not much point if it's painful to play (which it is.)

I will post pics here and/or in Luthier's Corner when the bass is done, hopefully soon because I want a brand-new string to walk all over!!! :bassist:

my girlfriend says I hum the bass lines to popular tunes...she says it takes her a minute to figure out what song it is...everyone else hums the vocal line, but we hum in the pocket! LOL

Speaking of girlfriends, I got a good one but I'm doubting the appropriateness of it :p
