You should smile!

you can assess as much as you like. And I was amping up some of my feelings specifically for that reply. But the fact is.....what good comes out of plasticifying your emotions? What good comes out of faking your feelings?

I'm used to doing it every day. Pick up the phone, "hi ____ how are you?" "wonderful" "great."

I used to have a bass player who played with Bowie early in his life. Drank himself all the way to slerosis of the liver from the fortune he made, and teaching children how to play music. Here's a rundown of how things went:

me: "hey ____ how are you?"
teacher: "****ing sucks!!"

Now, yea, if you're looking for odd looks and strange reactions, it probably works.

But I could respect him because he didn't try to mask it.

in this day and age, anyone who is going to tell me their lives are great and walk around with an ear to ear smile, I'm going to think they're looking for a raise.

Like it's said, honesty is the best policy

You need a serious change of perspective. Obviously you did not grasp, at all, what I was saying in my post.
Im not telling anyone to be fake or mask your feelings, Im saying you need to adjust your attitude so that when someone asks you how you are, you can honestly respond with "life is great". Because life is great, even when things ****ing suck. Again, I honestly hope you can find some positivity, otherwise your negative outlook may be the death of you, and no one here wants that.

+1. In other words, cheer up buttercup.:D

Right, but currently, life is a mistake. From my experiences/surveillances.

Right!

Life is no mistake, my friend. You are here, and with purpose, regardless of whether you know what it may be or not.
Saying that life is a mistake is an easy out that requires no thought nor introspection and will only further your negative outlook.
You dont have to accept this advice, and I realize that youre not asking for any, but Im going to lay it on you anyway.
Firstly, realize that "life" does not make mistakes, people do. The present is the result of a giant chain of cause and effect that has led to this very moment. What you do next will have a result on who you are 5 minutes, 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 months, 5 years from now. Why not start making a positive impact, rather than perpetuate a negative outlook? There is no better time to start than now.

Right!

children are born without parents, and their "purpose" for creation becomes nullified. Lots of things are without reason. And lots of things begin, and end through futile means.

Why? Here's one example. A man goes to college, abides by the rules his entire life, never wrongs anyone, yet fights a (lost) battle against beaurocracy, graduates in another profession and rather than managing to work in a field he his entirety into, he's become a tire clerk.

Then he goes to work within that field to help a business that never helps itself.

Cause? No effect.

I would submit that the man in your example never had a self realized sense of direction. He just aimlessly followed the rules, not ever deciding what he really wanted to do in his life. Mediocre effort yields mediocre results. I think Funkadelic summed it up most succinctly when they put it like this:

"Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" by Funkadelic

Travel like a king
Listen to the inner voice
A higher wisdom is at work for you
Conqering the stumbling blocks come easier
When the conqueror is in tune with the infinite
Every ending is a new beginning
Life is an endless unfoldment
Change your mind, and you change your relation to time
You can find the answer
The solution lies within the problem
The answer is in every question
Dig it?
An attitude is all you need to rise and walk away
Inspire yourself
Your life is yours
It fits you like your skin
The oak sleeps in the acorn
The giant sequoia tree sleeps in its tiny seed
The bird waits in the egg
God waits for his unfoldment in man
Fly on, children
Play on
You gravitate to that which you secretly love most
You meet in life the exact reproduction of your own thoughts
There is no chance, coincidence or accident
In a world ruled by law and divine order
You rise as high as your dominant aspiration
You descend to the level of your lowest concept of your self
Free your mind and your ass will follow
The infinite intelligence within you knows the answers
Its nature is to respond to your thoughts
Be careful of the thought-seeds you plant in the garden of your mind
For seeds grow after their kind
Play on, children
Every thought felt as true
Or allowed to be accepted as true by your conscious mind
Take roots in your subconscious
Blossoms sooner or later into an act
And bears its own fruit
Good thoughts bring forth good fruit
b.s. thoughts rot your meat
Think right, and you can fly
The kingdom of heaven is within
Free your mind, and your ass will follow
Play on, children
Sing on, lady

Bah. F it. Tell them to get bent. Be who you gotta be and just roll with that.
This is actually something I considered once when I was actually in a really bad mood and someone told me to smile. I wanted to say to them "Go find some place to f*ck your self, do so, and start minding your own business there."

I'm glad I didn't though.

No, dont make up reasons to smile, just live your life with happiness and the smiles comes naturally.
Id venture to bet that some of these people who you think are "fake smiling" are showing their true emotions. Some people, despite adversity, can still maintain a positive attitude and are capable of being happy and smiley. Im going through a lot right now, myself, but I dont let that keep me from beeing happy and positive.

Fake smiling is not something I see every day, and it has a very peculiar look to it. I don't think it's an issue of having a positive attitude, but instead wanting people to think you do. I think some people have this mindset that if no one knows they have problems then they have no problems.

Also, scorpionldr:
You trolling or what? Your posts concern me.

No one's purpose can be nullified. Youre thinking far too narrowly.

My friend, you are far too young and have not experienced nearly enough to be so jaded. Its up to the individual to define what their purpose and direction will be. Your example does not exemplify cause and effect at all, it reads more like a person who feels entitled to a position because they went through the motions of getting a degree. Ive been there too, thats when I dropped out of school and started working full time at a job that I dont care for as a means to provide for myself. Being able to provide for myself has brought me more satisfaction, and as a result I have the oppoortunity to pursue my passions.

Also, bassinplace summed up your example better than I could:

Dangit why must you be so ... Zen ... i guess is the word.

and I agree ... if you are happy at some point it's going to show on the outside in some form or another.

Why, Im not so sure. Ive been "zen" for some time, and its only been getting worse, haha. Ive been through a lot of pain in my day, and its cleared my mind to allow me to see that this is not my world. It belongs not to me nor anyone else, and I have only a short time here to enact and spread as much positivity as I can.

Lets start with your little entitlement bit. I never said I deserved anything. I've always said the minute you put your money into an education that it's about the same as putting a coin in a toilet and flushing it, guessing whether or not it lands heads or tails. However, because I was discriminated over some pretty trivial points (saying you want to help people and give purpose as a music educator?) that considering I was doing B average work was a pretty harsh business. If you really want to discuss my education.

Bassinplace makes a rather generalized statement. Its great to be "free" and all, but like I used the quote, freedom isn't free. I wanted to tour, takes money to do that. I wanted to do all sorts of things; none ever worked out.

I've been ****ed with a good portion of my life, and it hasn't worked out.

Why did I do "as told" for such a long time? Because I was young and didn't realize everything I've ever heard an authority figure tell me was bull**** and a lie to get me to finish up and get out of their face.

The meaning of all this? That there's always someone waiting to rub your face in the dirt, and I'll be damned if I'm going to smile about it.

Perhaps you should right some blues songs.

Before I address anything else in your post, I just want to let you know that you are going to have a difficult time in life if you maintain your current attitude. No one can shove your face in the dirt if you dont let them.

Actually, I dont want to discuss your education at all. I wasnt aware that you used yourself as an example, since you used nouns like "a man" and "he" rather than "myself" or "I". So it sounds to me that you, like all of us, have, in your youth, made some bad decisions. You went into a very competitive field with a low success rate and your surprised you didnt make it? Do you know how many people on here, myself included, have been dealt the same hand? These are all results of our own actions. You seem to make a lot of excuses, externalizing everything instead of taking resposibility for what youve created. Im going to give it to you straight up... you didnt work hard enough, nor did you get lucky. Just like I havent.

I've been ****ed with a good portion of my life, and it hasn't worked out.

Here's a hint man... we've all been ****ed with, some a lot worse than you. It must be a miracle that there are any happy people in the world at all, right? I mean, how can someone who loses their legs or is rendered quadripalegic ever have any happiness in such a cruel world? I dont like to keep bringing this up, because its certainly not the worst that can happen to someone, but next month I should be celebrating my sons 5th birthday, and I will, only I'll be doing it at a cemetary. And, I'll be doing it alone because my exwife is an unfaithful liar. But if you think Im sitting here miserable because life hasnt gone the way that I planned youre fooling yourself. The universe doesnt give two craps about our plans.

Why did I do "as told" for such a long time? Because I was young and didn't realize everything I've ever heard an authority figure tell me was bull**** and a lie to get me to finish up and get out of their face.

Thats great, youve realized that you need to figure life out for yourself rather than be handed all the answers, but youre not going to find what youre looking for in misery, pal. I really feel kind of sorry for you, as you do not come across as a happy person at all. I hope that assessment is wrong and that you can learn to love the one life you were lucky enough to have been given.

I'm not really going to go into the whole thread, but I'll simply respond to this:
"You went into a very competitive field with a low success rate and your surprised you didnt make it? Do you know how many people on here, myself included, have been dealt the same hand?"
Considering I made it out of HS, made it through comm college on time, and never really failed anything "hard", I didn't expect that doing the work would make teachers manipulate a student's grades to crash a GPA in a university setting.
