Your Look On Stage

Just someting to think about;

If your over 40 and not in great shape, I would not reccommend that un-ironed cargo shorts, gym shoes and over sized t-shirt look. Leave that for the younger guys.

No offence, I have seen this and unless your going for the "I'm a bum" look it's not good.

This is my older slightly more hippie look. That T-shirt ended up being signed by the boys in Black Stone Cherry so now I don't wear it (and will soon get another, as I support the free Tibet cause and love those yaks!).

I guess I go for a slightly more industrial look now. Steel workman's boots, urban camo combats and longsleeve black/grey tops or occasionally blue/black striped. Nothing amazing but to me it sums up my role in the band perfectly. The guitard/singer dress more positively and the drummer and I are more 'down to business'.

Nice look!

Depends on the band, but I often wear hideously loud shirts when playing outside of church. Unless I'm playing shirtless. Or show up wearing a suit for no good reason. I never really do costume, though - even if I'm wearing something absurd like a bleach-splattered suit jacket I will wear it on the way to and back from the gig (on foot or public transport). I want people to think that I think that looks awesome, not that I think it looks funny - and if you change into something for the gig I think it takes away from that somewhat.

So, basically, I try to look like a genuine huge douchebag, not someone who's just dressing up as a douchebag for the stage. I also act in blatant, shameless attention-grabbing ways, especially when playing simple parts, like this bit well documented in the "world's worst bassist" thread a few months ago:

Black jeans - not too faded. A cool looking button down shirt. Something a bit shiny. I really think that you should not look like you just stepped out of the crowd. Better dressed is important.

Now back in the 80s - it was spandex pants, capezio shoes, cool MTV style shirts. Everything was like MTV. I don't do the spandex anymore :-) If I went to a club I would dress very much like I was in a band. People would actually come up and ask if I was in the band that night.

Now - if you want to make the bass player wonder - show up in an Ampeg T-Shirt and watch the band like you are studying it. That just SCREAMS bass player. Then talk to the band leader about trivia when he is not in ear shot :-) (No - I don't do that - too busy at home when I don't play)

we don't really have a look yet, we've only been on stage together 3 times.

I would say you have a look. The young and attractive female look. You would not believe how easy it will be to leverage that look.

We had an instant in too, we have an attractive 26 year old female lead singer. I really think when she would talk with a club owner it's an instant booking.Unfortunateley she does not have the time for it now and bookings have been delegated to me.

Not much happens when a 57 year old guy talks to a club owner. They probably say "some older guy, trying to hang onto the dream came in here, I got rid of him". Or maybe,"some olde dude came in here, I felt sorry for him and gave him a date"
