8 grand will get a lot of bass no matter where you go. I really think I would be looking at a full custom built for that price. I bit the bullet and had my dream bass built and it was worth every penny and then some.

I’m retiring after 42 years in 30 days.
To mark the occasion, I’m looking at finding my “dream” bass. I will be pretty much debt free and have a substantial amount to spend. Other than a museum piece, I can pretty much get what I want for the first time ever.
I play mostly country/swamp rock/blues rock and also play at church on Sundays.
In recent years, my tastes have run to the P or P/J sound and light weight and playability are huge factors.
What would you get for, say, under $8k?

Not trying to throw a wrench in the retirement works, but do you plan to take this dream bass away from home to play?
I ask because I had a bass built that was my unicorn, everything I wanted in a bass down to all stainless hardware. It was a real looker and played as nice. Sadly I quickly discovered I hated taking it out of the house. Even a tiny scratch would have ruined the perfection it represented to me. So I quit taking it out of the house. A few months later I sold it and have never again had much desire for perfection or a holy grail vibe in a bass. I accepted that they are tools and tools get used and when tools get used they get worn. If I want functional art I’ll stick to tie dye.

I love this thread, but honestly, I bought my dream basses before I turned 40. My thinking, I can play now. No arthritis, no other physical ailments, etc. Why wait? I had the money, and bought an Fbass AC6 in 2012 and a Sadowsky NYC PJ 5 in 2013.

I agree. I like early 1950's too. I have 1954 P and a 1963 P. I'm not worthy, but in my defense I gig with them

When I have them, I gig my vintage instruments too. Only at venues I’ve gigged before though. Here in KC there are some uh… questionable gigs where I tend to bring my squier pj or a mjt parts build

My retirement bass ended up being an Ibanez SR500BP, some kind of burst poplar veneer. My then GF now wife bought it for me.

Last year, on cusp of retirement, I commissioned a wonderful LEH - Ellis Hahn does incredible work, and at a very reasonable price. Turns out I'm still working the day gig on a very reduced schedule, and having some of that "don't want to take it out of the house" syndrome described above, but I've tinkered with the action to get what I want, the reverse-P (Nordstrand) is a an absolute beast, and I'm digging the 3-band pre.

The first thing that comes to mind here is a Wal, but that's gonna be more than $8k.

The other options that leap to mind: Kubicki ExFactor. Some Spector. Fodera YinYang. Dingwall.

Another vote for a Lull P bass or PJ bass. I have a P4 and a V4. They are incredible basses in every respect.
