Your thoughts on heavy metal

I greatly respect the people that are intrigued by it, but I have zero attraction.
I tend to like more melodic stuff, and I don't hear enough intricate rhythmic complexity usually happening, for my taste.
I just hear emotion expressed with... umm... enthusiasm.

It's just like any other genre. Heavy Metal can be anything from simple power chords to intricate wankering.
Vinnie Vincent used to pull off some Heavy Metal stuff that was pretty impressive. He was actually too Heavy Metal for KISS.
Even within one band there is all types.
Although Lemmy wouldn't agree that they were a Heavy Metal band, some of their stuff could definitely be classified as Heavy Metal, and a lot of it is pretty difficult to duplicate.

Ooooh, RESPECT. I respect some, not all, of the music. Some of the tough guy posturing gets a bit much for my tastes, though. Though different folks have different ideas of what constitutes "heavy metal".
Some of it can be very intricate aND challenging to play, and some of it is lousy.
My observation is the baseline of quality is going down. I do believe the decades of imagery in the genre has backfed into new players, and it affects the mindset of most on the genre, making it a shallower pool on average. Then there's the smaller percentage that are truly awesome. Look at a Living Colour for example.

My definition, and selection within the newer sub genres will be different than many.
Metal, categorically is broad: some is unmitigated noise, some is a sonic soundscape.

Playing my way through Live after Death (or a recognizable facsimile) on and off as i work today.
(i was there for 3 out of 4 nights at the LBA where they recorded it)
Met him once, spent a bit of time talking, my cheeks hurt from all the grinning

As an art form, I can respect it. Many of the runs I would hear in a symphony inspire and are heard in some forms of metal.
It takes can take a great deal of technical skill to play metal. At least the shreds and all that. I certainly can't do it.

Yes I like it and the more extrem the better to me.
I also like the creativity some player shows in that style that remind me of classical music a lot

There are a lot of types of metal. Helloween sound quite a bit different than Napalm Death. I tend to like the melodic groovy thrash variety such as Pantera, Testament, Machine Head, etc... The most, but I like a bit of many different sub-genres. As long as the songwriting is good, I can enjoy it. It seems like the trend recently has been in creating complex rhythms that are so dense and confusing that they leave your brain stunned. I prefer memorable hooks, even if those hooks are ridiculously brutal.
I prefer cookie monster growls and loud kick drum, with everything else muddy and non intelligable.

I have new respect for Tom Araya, after trying to get down some of his licks.
I love metal....not everything but I'd definitely say I'm a metal head.
Some are way more talented, like with any genre really.
I don't love these guys but he's a seriously talented bass player.
Of course there's Alex Webster and Cannibal Corpse. Watching these guys do there thing live for 90 mins is mind blowing.
And Nolly from Periphery is a great player.
Metals not for everyone sure. But I'd love to see a blues or jazz player attempt some of this stuff.
