Zon

The truss issue is certainly something to think about, but I'll say that I really prefer the tone from a neck that isn't under tension. You might think that is weird but I have dealt with a lot of high-end acoustic guitars, basses, URB's... and there really does seem to be something positive to not having the neck under tension. I'd generally call it a more "open" tone. Also, my experience is that the necks that Joe Zon builds simply do not move.
Well all strung necks have tension on them, the question is, how much compensation is designed into the neck such that it's "flat" (with the proper relief) on the plane of the strings when under that tension. That's where it gets tricky, especially with different strings having different tensions, and also, yes, Zon materials, design, and manufacture have tolerances. The truss rod, in the grand scheme of things, is nothing more than a secondary fine tune adjustment (unless the neck is crap, in which case you have a bigger problem and are trying to solve it the wrong way).

This translates to one Zon not being exactly like another at the very end (trust me on this, I own four of them, and have had three others fairly recently). I'm pretty sure that adjusting the trussrod to preference would be a "one time" deal as I'm confident that, once "set", like you said, it'll never move again from there... that's just a consistency thing. Wood would be the same way if it was hermetically seald from the environment, thus locking it permanently to a specific behavior from the date of final construction to forever.

In other words, regarding your statement on the effects of having a trussrod, "I reject your reality and insert my own." :)
 
I still can't see a truss rod or 2 that would be able to exert enough force to actually move the neck to a flatter/less relief in a Zon neck? Maybe the new style graphite or stainless truss rods are much stronger in achieving this but I've tried to move my neck at the headstock(Billy Sheehan style)& I can't budge it at all! This is on my Legacy 6, never tried the Sonus fretless 6 yet. Maybe the new necks are built different?

Believe it. Joe wouldn't offer them if they didn't do anything.

I'd bet you're getting consistency confused with rigidity. Zon necks are hollow, which is why they're lightweight compared to wood, and also why a Zon will NEVER neck dive on you. Yes, ounce for ounce the material is stiffer than most woods as well as being a zillion times more consistent against forces on all three axes (in other words, no such thing as corkscrew and whatnot).

I'd bet if you loosened up a few of your strings, the rest would get a lot closer to the frets... maybe even start laying on them if you had fairly low action to start with. I think if a neck is TOO stiff, is when you start to really get into that nasty "sterile sound" territory. Zons definitely don't have that problem, either. Stiff is good, but too stiff is still bad.

Consistency, on the other hand, means that, under a typical range of tensions, the neck will always return to the exact same shape and orientation... regardless of the environment it's in. THAT is the beauty of the Zon neck. Action? Set and forget. Just change the strings. Done.

Heck, don't take my word for it, call and talk to Mark.

I've owned Zon's for years, 5 to date, I know all about their design after many hours on the phone with Joe & Mark. I have even asked Joe to build a neck through & he said it would cost big $$$ & sound way too sterile...so, I bought a Modulus TBX 6, and it's amazing, tons of lows + clarity & sustain, definetly not sterile but not as "woody" as a Zon.
My Legacy is tuned down to F# presently & it sounds great, very low action & the relief hasn't changed 1mm. The strings are heavier but still low in tension compared to a standard 440Hz tuning & I still cant move the neck(I'm not weak & I also dodn't try to break it). I also can not move my TBX neck(neck through graphite) & it has a skinny neck compared to the Zon.

PS: Wish Joe would make a few 6+ stringed n/t's for the adventurous type...

I'd say the composite necks are definitely stiffer than wood, but maybe he changes the neck design to help this along.

Regardless, I'm gonna' conceded a little here...

I just did my own string test on my Sonus Custom 5, and must admit, it didn't move as much as I thought it would, but I do think it moved a little. So either he mods the neck, or the trussrod is designed in such a way (either in its own construction and/or how it's mounted in the neck) that it can deal with it. I've never asked Mark (or Joe) if they use standard dual-action trussrods either.

Bottom line is, again, I refuse to believe Zon would sell snake oil, so I completely trust that, one way or another, they've got it figured out.

Also, it is a known fact that some necks "settle" after a while (in fact, this has been the core of some sour debate here at TB), so I know for a fact that they don't remain 100.00% exactly the same as the day they left the factory in all cases, either.
 
have an old zon legacy elite here... old zon logo at headstock, set neck, single bart humbucker at p-position. i'm just wondering how old is it.

any ideas?

I've talked to them about serial numbers and apparently, they just number them sequentially or something regardless of model/year, so they just have to look it up in their database (which they will happily do for you).

Thanks!! Man you're right abt the Zon... I'm not a boutique bass user, but this one kinda contradicts the usual jazz/fusion styles that I would imagine most boutique bass users would do with their Zons. Its loud and aggressive and built to rock out. Roundwounds and the brass nut make it extra zingy too. :bassist:

If it is early 90's, I'd guess '90 or '91, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't actually an 80's Zon. I have a '93 Legacy Elite, and about the only thing it has in common with that one (aside from the body shape) is the Schaller hardware (roller bridge & tuners). That one still has the old Zon logo, and I'm not exactly sure when Joe changed it.
 
How hollow? like fully hollow? then what do the truss rods attach to?
Does the hollow chamber of the neck create any louder audible um-amplified tone?
Good questions. I don't know the exact neck construction or truss rod integration method. On the tone, all I can say is it has a fantastic unplugged tone, and as we all know, that pretty much always equates to great amplified tone, which I think is an accurate description of Zon. :)
