Ah...I remember that LW!
Did you end up keeping it?

onewebfoot - I'm not sure that's a Sonus SPECIAL...I think the Special has both pickups closer to the bridge. Wouldn't trade mine for almost anything.

I'm not sure how it could warp short of running it over with an 18 wheeler. Carbon fiber shatters (one of the reasons it's such a great material for race cars). Normal temperature/humidity changes in climate are not enough to move it.

I did have a problem with an early Sonus 4 neck. This was an early model back in the Wilkenson bridge era.

Happened on the way to a gig on a really HOT day; +90 degrees and busted AC in the car. Sitting in traffic, the car got hotter then a Wal Mart toaster oven. When I pulled the bass out at the venue the strings were laying flat on the fret board.

There wasn't much Joe could do but offer up a new neck for $500 and give some adivce to my tech on how to fix it. He applied heat and pressure to get a little bow back in it. That along with some heavier guage strings to add more "pull" fixed things up a bit.

I've never had an issue on any other Zon I have/had many. In fact, most of the time they're nearly in perfect tune from case to gig (Yeah, I tune 'em anyway. I'm not a guitar player).

I did learn a valuable lesson on that hot day which I'll pass on free of charge: Bring 2 basses to your gig. You never know . . .

Cairobill - other than my interest in procuring ONE upright electric, the only GAS I still have is for a second Zon (perhaps a fretted Vinny 5, in my case). :-)

Stachio - I think you are RIGHT. Revelation time. :-) Referencing my pic on page 1, or the 4th instrument from bottom of this page (spalted top maple):

My axe is not a Special (as was described by Bass NW - my source when I got this used, but i'd buy from them again), and it's not a standard Sonus, as cited by Bass Central. Now i'm thinking it's an RT5 Deluxe or 519 with non-standard 17mm string spacing. Don't know. 34" scale, 5 strings, 17mm string spacing, still appears to have ZB4.3 electronics (but this would make it a 519). Bartolini pickups with observed spacing. I had to choose one instrument from the used Zon market a few months back. I wanted fretless five. I sought out Zon. I'd take this one all over again, regardless of its classification. :-)

Wow crazy. I stand corrected. Guess that's one advantage to bolt on. If it were a set neck the bass would be done.

On a side note... don't know what all you guys are using for strings on your Zons, but I've recently been using DR Sunbeams on my fretless one and man they sound awesome on there!

Reason I ask is because I know of a dealer that had to send back several because the necks had warped. This was 6 or 7 years ago and I'm sure very unusual.

Go for it! You will not regret getting a VB5! It has become my favorite bass. Alss, as Zon's go, it's a bargain at less than $2k.
