Zoom b3 patch Ideas

Here's a new patch I came up with. this patch closely duplicates the heavy distortion sounds of an aguilar agro bass distortion pedal.

Agressive bass distortion

Section 1: limiter: thresh: 25, ratio: 5, level: 90, release: 4

Section 2: squeak: gain: 40, tone: 45, level: 100, balance: 18

Section 3: ag amp: bass:3, mid:4, treble:5, midfq:300hz, gain:45, level:75, char: both, cab: al4x10, mix: 50

Here's another patch idea I came up with. this patch closely duplicates the warm heavy distortion sounds of a catalinbread sft bass distortion pedal.

SFT distortion

Section 1: comp + dist.: thresh: 20, gain: 70, level: 80, dry: 80, tone: 45, ratio: 5, attackL 7

Section 2: splitter: hi: 24, lo: 38, freq: 200hz, level: 90

Here's another patch idea I came up with. this patch has clean punchy bass sound with a blended overdrive resembling a voodoo lab sparkle drive.

Clean grit

Section 1: m comp: thresh: 20, ratio: 5, level: 90, attack: 7

Section 2: t-scream: gain: 40, tone: 50, level: 100, balance: 23

Section 3: ag amp: bass:3, mid:4, treble:5, midfq:300hz, gain:45, level:75, char: both, cab: swr4x10, mix: 50

Here's another patch idea I came up with. this patch closely duplicates a distorted tech 21 vt bass pedal.

VT bass grind

Section 1: t-scream: gain: 30, tone: 50, level: 90, balance: 25

Section 2: limiter: thresh: 20, ratio: 4, level: 90, release: 5

Section 3: svt: bass:3, mid:4, treble:4, midfq:300hz, gain:40, level: 40, ultra: low, cab:ag8x10, mix:50

Based on the previous VT Bass patch I've figured, here's an upgrade to give it some vintage greasy dirt :

1- BB Preamp : Gain : 9 - Bass : 3 - Treble : 7 - Blend : 65 - Level : 70
2- SVT : Bass : 0 - Mid : 0 - Treble : 3 - Mid_F : 1.2 kHz - Gain : 45 - Level :26 - Ultra : Off - Cab : ORGN - Mix : 29
3- AcBsPre : Gain : 50 - Depth : 8 - Level : 100 - Bass : 2 - L-Mid : 2 - LM-F : 1.6kHz - Mid : 0 - HMid : 2 - Treble : -10

Gain on the BB Preamp can be pushed or reduced to give more or less dirt with maybe some adjustment with its Blend.
To give some different flavors (in the spirit of the Era knob of the VMT... yes I say "in the spirit", it's less sophisticated there), change the LM-F on the AcBsPre : it focuses the drive on different kinds of mids.
And for more clarity push the Hmid on the AcBsPre.

The tone is not sexy as hell when played alone but in a mix it should work well.

For those who prefer more scooped tones, increase the Cab Mix on the SVT sim.

Groovy...Inspired by your vt bass patch idea, I came up with the vt bass grind patch that I've posted here. it duplicates the grinding sounds that the vt bass provides. the settings is a little different, but it does have a nice grit.

Yes I saw it. I also tried your SFT sim.
Nice patch too :)
On my own, I am searching patches that work well in a gig/rehearsal situation, having in mind that I plug my Zoom in a regular bass rig, not a full range speaker. And so, even if my rig is not too much coloured, what works the best in my case are tones were the lows are not too much heavy and where mids are really present (not especially boosted, but easy to hear).
I tried a lot of more modern tones (more bass and grindy trebles) and it simply didn't work in my band. But it sounds nicer when practising alone.
For example the SansAmp Bass Driver gave me poor results, when I know some other users like it a lot.

This is what I like with the B3 : the good combination of effects can reach a lot of different tones and fit the bill to very different kind of players.
My only grief is when I'm looking for heavy drive/fuzz. The result always sound artificial to my ears. There's always this digital tone in the high mids/highs which does not sound completely right to me.

The trick to combine a dirt effect to an amp sim is really nice for moderate drive effects. The drive models can sound a bit thin on their own, and an amp sim helps to fatten the things without having the feeling of over eq'ing.

Anyway the way you manage the different effects to get a resulting nice tone helped me a lot to understand how to use the B3 at its best. It's not intuitive :)

Quick interjection: do you guys ever test these patches out with in-ear headphones? I'm new to the B3, and I've been a little disappointed in the overall quality, but I'm left wondering if my $30 Sennheisers are just not allowing for the full range of frequencies.

My rig is at my band's practice space, so I've yet to test any patches out in open air.

No, I never do.
I always test them in the context in which they are intended to be used.

eg. Live: Initially at home, then tweaked when I'm playing with the band.
or Recording: Through my studio monitors and headphones.

Thanks, dude. I see what you mean about looking for a heavy drive/fuzz sound. sometimes it's a little tough to find a heavy sound of your own. many people have personal taste when it comes to a bass distortion sound. in the case of the zoom b3 and the zoom ms-60b, I like using the boss metal zone model through an ampeg svt model. this gives me a sound like an ebs metaldrive, only it has more bass in the mix and it has a warm heavy sound. I also dig the vmt patch I came up called vintage grind(which you can find on this thread on page 38) and a lot of people agreed that this patch closely duplicates a darkglass distortion sound. and yeah I do agree that the drive models can be a bit thin on their own and the use of an amp model can improve the sound of the drive you use. that's why many of the patch I created oftenly has either an amp model or a preamp model to go with that. and with a certain eq setting, the distortion patch can sound a whole lot better.

Hello guys, what a fantastic job in this thread! Congratulations!
I'd like to ask you a favor: I have a B3 and a Fender Precision (with SD SPB3). Is it possible to get this tone at 0:35s and 0:45s or at least to get close? Thank you in advance!

New patch for Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love.Is not the same tone like the original one,i try to duplicate the John Paul tone but i have not success, but this patch works really well playing this song with my band.
I use a pick and my Ibanez SR705 with rounds. If you use some split coils humbuckers bass and PA speaker the tone will be same.

Here the patch for downloading Dropbox - Lotta Love.b3p

And a audio sample [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Here the original bass line of the song, played from the John himself

I can give it a try and if i have good results i post the patch here.Stay tuned. This is the signature Billy tone.

Here's a new patch idea I came up with. this patch is an attempt to duplicated the insanely heavy sounds of an idiot box blower box bass distortion pedal.

Stupid heavy

Section 1: squeak: gain: 75, tone: 40, level: 90, balance: 17

Section 2: bottom b: bass: 5, treble: 3, level: 50

Section 3: svt: bass:4, mid:3, treble: -2, midfq:300hz, gain:30, level: 30, ultra: both, cab: E 4x10, mix:50

Here you are mate.Is not 100% same, but i think you can use it with the same results.
You must use a P bass with rounds.Tone control 50% open.Feel free to play with the tone to find YOUR liking tone.
Total and patch volume at 100.
I made that sample with the B3 and my PA speakers,so if you use real amp make adjustments with the amps EQ.

The patch is here, the is name P Vintage Overdrive. Dropbox - P Vin Over.b3p

Audio sample here [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] .

And i grab the opportunity to ask everybody,is this a digital sounding patch?I think is very "real" analog one. Please tell me your opinion,i really want to know what people says about it.

Hope you like it;)
