Joe I record damn near all of our rehearsals using a small 4 track recorder. Just coming off the board as you are doing. I just use two tracks for stereo mode. Honestly it took me damn near 4 months to get all the settings where they sound right in the mix. When you're doing it into one track...

Are you using anything post wise to smooth out the mix? You can EQ it and try a few filters with an editing program.
