    $$$Bass w/ $Amp? or $$$Amp w/ $Bass?

Hmm... thats a good question. I would say spend less on the bass than the amp+cab. My reason for this is: Some cheaper basses are really good quality and playability, but cheap amps and cabs dont seem to cut it. I have a Squier 5 string P-bass and absolutely love it. In my opinion a quality amp...

muting slapped open E while slapping A?

When you move to the A string and slap your thumb will hit the A string, but the meaty part of the palm behind the thumb will make contact with the E string. Since that meaty, soft part of the palm hits the E string it should stop it from vibrating. I slap parallel so if thats not your style...

Melodic? *may classify as a rant*

The word melodic gets thrown around a lot when talking about bass-lines. I always here that term when someone refers to a metal bassist. Its not so much that i dislike melody but why does that become the criteria for judging metal bass players. For example, I saw an interview with the creator...

    Left hand technique

In my opinion hand position is causing less difficulties than how you "wear" your bass. The push to look cool and have your bass hanging to your knees forces the thumb wrap in order to keep the wrist strait. When i took lessons my teacher told me to "wear my bass like a bow-tie" . my wrist...

So being a bass player is now a psychiatric disorder?

In my case the psychiatric disorder came first.., then I started playing bass. You think there is a correlation between crazy and music?

Ford vs. Chevy - the bass refinish showdown!

Ford, Chevy, Dodge, it doesn't matter, as long as we come together to hate on Hondas. Just kidding, I kind of lost faith in the American car makers after the bailout. As for the color I like both of your choices.

    Storing your bass

If this is the wrong forum feel free to move it. Just curious where in your home do you keep your bass when you aren't playing it? The reason I ask is because my house has a finished bass-ment;) , and thats where I practice. The problem is the humidity. I have made sure to bring my bass back...

    Bass as lead instrument?

Love 'em or hate 'em I would consider bass the lead instrument in Mudvayne. A lot of the time the guitar just "chugs" along and the bass provides the melody and groove at the same time. I could be wrong though.

    Whats with P-basses?

They sound great. Even P style basses from other companies have a similar sound. I don't know how to explain the sound but to me they sound "gritty" . They are also cool because it is the bare minimum; passive, one pickup, 1 volume knob, 1 tone knob. You just play it without all the worry...

    High standards

Where I live in Maine there isn't much of a music scene, a problem I'm sure some of you also have. But when I find somebody to potentially start something with they aren't that great technique wise or that good with the theory side of things (some say they don't care to know either:eyebrow:)...

    Things bassists LOVE!

I agree with this 100%. We all know the bass player stereotype, people think it's easy and boring. We know thats not true and I feel bass players will tend to be better all-around musicians because, for me anyway, we set out to discredit that negative view. It also means we take pride in what we...

    another mudvayne thread

I don't care how old this thread is because I just began discovering the genius of Ryan Martinie and have been blown away. In my opinion his bass playing makes the band. He is rhythm section but his lines also provide most of the melody for the song, Dull Boy is a great example of this. I just...

Are my fingers unfit to play bass? (pic inside)

My hands are strange too. I have really wide and flat palms with short fingers but seem to do alright. I learned OFPF but then went to 1-2-4 because the blade of my hand (I think that is the right term) would cramp up. I could actually watch the muscles tighten up and the, edge of my palm on...

Dumb Craig's List Ads pt.4: Dumber and Dumbest

Living here in Maine there are only about 3 musicians anyway so our craigslist musicians classifieds are pretty bland. Unless you live in Portland or southern maine it's a pretty dull to non-existent music scene. My only experience with a crazy craigslist add was by a guitarist looking for a...

    help Larry Hartke!!

I know some don't dig Hartke stuff but it will be my next rig. All the good things I have heard about their customer service is astonishing. For example, I have heard of them doing free repairs (well the shipping and handling isn't free but what ever) on their products even if the warranty runs...
