Do you bring a backup bass to gigs?

Love my basses and treat them well. But experienced a failure of one of the pickups on my 72 P bass during a gig. Glad I had a backup. These days I play live broadcasts and would never show up without another bass that could finish the job.

I want your opinion, have a choice next month to buy one of these.

I would suggest spending some time with a thinner neck to determine whether that is, in fact, easier on the hand. I have gravitated away from the small and thinner necks to wider fretboards and more chunkier necks. Its a bit like the Pepsi taste test. One small sized cup of Pepsi is sweeter...

Which Bass has the Largest Cult Following? (Brought to you by Jerkweasel)

The Jerkweasel seems to have gathered quite a following here on TB. It hasn't even gone into production yet and seems to have gained cult status. Just ask Nobody.

Fender Classic 50s, RW, and other P neck profiles compared?

That seems to fit my recollection of the tonal difference between the 57 and 62 AVRIs. I thought the 57 had a bit more top and bottom and the 62 was a bit more focused on the mids. And that's not to say that either bass was lacking anything. The most noticeable difference was the neck profile...

What Overdrive pedals are you using?

For overdrive I use a TC Electronics Sparkle Drive, great pedal for being able to add back your clean signal into the mix. For distortion I use a GK Diesel Drive. I think of that pedal as the "RAT" for bass players. Having some control of EQ works great. For all out nasty fuzz a ZVEX...

Does Fender still rule the stool?

I prefer a 4 string. The B strings on Fenders are just too floppy.

Fender Classic 50s, RW, and other P neck profiles compared?

I cannot provide a comparison other than having owned a number of different US P basses including 1960, 1968, 1971, 1999, 2001, and 2008. My current favorite is a 1996 57 AVRI and that is solely because of the neck and fretboard. It has the meatiest neck of any of the other P basses but seems...

    NBD 90s Stingray

+1 on the early to mid 90's Stingrays. The quality and level of craftsmanship from that era is outstanding. I have one that will not be going anywhere. Wonderful bass for live gigging.

Showed up to recording session without a Fender...

I showed up with my trusty P-bass for a session with a real control-freak of a producer. He made me go back home and get the original Fender strap and cord that came with the guitar when I purchased it new. Fender accessories, don't leave home without them and for heaven's sake, don't loose...

Truss rod at the end of the line? what does it mean?

+1 on adding some washers under the truss rod nut. I have done that on a few of my older Fenders where the truss rod nut appeared to be too far recessed into the neck. Provides some piece of mind that, all other things being equal, you will not strip either the nut or the rod by running out of...
