Love my basses and treat them well. But experienced a failure of one of the pickups on my 72 P bass during a gig. Glad I had a backup. These days I play live broadcasts and would never show up without another bass that could finish the job.

I would suggest spending some time with a thinner neck to determine whether that is, in fact, easier on the hand. I have gravitated away from the small and thinner necks to wider fretboards and more chunkier necks. Its a bit like the Pepsi taste test. One small sized cup of Pepsi is sweeter...

That seems to fit my recollection of the tonal difference between the 57 and 62 AVRIs. I thought the 57 had a bit more top and bottom and the 62 was a bit more focused on the mids. And that's not to say that either bass was lacking anything. The most noticeable difference was the neck profile...

For overdrive I use a TC Electronics Sparkle Drive, great pedal for being able to add back your clean signal into the mix. For distortion I use a GK Diesel Drive. I think of that pedal as the "RAT" for bass players. Having some control of EQ works great. For all out nasty fuzz a ZVEX...
