    RIP Chef.......

RIP. I always appreciated his posts and thoughtful replies. TB will not be the same without his input. Sending good vibes to his family and friends.

Seafoam green: the pepto-bismol of greens

Don't forget harvest gold appliances. My Robin is seafoam green, but it looks weird in every photo.

Ryan at Robb's is a pretty good guy. I'll miss Mars because it was a lot closer than the drive to Boulder. All of the Mars warranty work moved up to Vacuum Tube Supplies on Santa Fe. I haven't visited them (yet), but my guitar player did and he was impressed with them.

Warmoth Antigua P-J bass build! Ultra bright tone edition!

I, too, have a dream. I've been thinking of putting together one just like yours, except putting a bound/blocked maple neck like the ones on the "70s reissue". Did both the body and the scratch plate both come from Warmoth? Thanks! Jeremy

    Source Audio Sourcerers Society (S.A.S.S.)

I have a Bass Multiwave Pro. There's really nothing quite like it out there. I really enjoy using the expression pedal feature to get things a little weird. Can I get in the cool kids' club?

    Wiring stacked volume/tone pots.

Yeah, that was exactly the issue. Thanks for your help, line6man. I feel pretty silly and long-winded posting about my issue instead of just using my multimeter. JZ

    Wiring stacked volume/tone pots.

The trouble I was having was that the neck volume wasn't cutting the sound completely, and seemed to be doing some "interacting" with the bridge volume (this is what happens when I let someone else wire up a bass). I was pretty irritated. After all of my consternation, I got out the...

    Wiring stacked volume/tone pots.

I hate to resurrect this thread, but I'm having issues with the tone control of the louder pickup behaving like a master tone in addition to the volume blending issues, and it looks like you've conquered this wiring diagram. My setup is a Lindy Fralin P with a Duncan hot stacked jazz into two...

    Way to go JimmyM!

I've been lurking and getting Ampeg wisdom since coming to TB a few years ago. I can't think of a more deserving endorser/champion for Ampeg/Loud. Jimmy's a goldmine for 'em when it comes down to it. Congratulations, Jimmy. JZ

    MXR Bass Compressor

I've been lurking on this thread since the M87 got such rave reviews at NAMM. I picked one up at a local shop two Saturdays ago, and finally found the time to fiddle with the pedal over this past weekend. I'm not much of a compressor wizard (really never have used one in a pedal, except in...

Ditto on that. Glen at Mars does great work, but currently has a 2 week wait time (I JUST dropped off one of my Mesas over the weekend). Once he gets to it, it's usually a really quick turnaround. Ryan at Robb's always seems to get to stuff really fast, but I haven't had as good luck...

    MXR Bass Compressor

Got one over the weekend at a local independent shop. I haven't had an opportunity to dink around with it--they shackled me in the studio with a Sta-Level, so there was really no need for the MXR. I'm completely new to compression in my rig, I just always love what my bass sounds like in the...

I had a good time, despite having to play with a broken foot on chairs and stools and narcotics. Both of my bands, Bad Luck City and Ross Etherton and the Chariots of Judah made the Backbeat "travelogue" by Tom Murphy, [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. Bad Luck City has a couple of...

Neither of my bands paid to play (and wouldn't). I think that we just asked the folks who were booking the event if we could play. It was that easy. Best of luck with the knee surgery--I'm having a bad time with recovery from foot surgery last month. JZ

    US: West Colorado Club

Indeed, both of my bands are this year. Ross Etherton & the Chariots of Judah plays Saturday at 8 pm at the Irish Rover, and Bad Luck City plays Sunday at 11 pm at Hi-Dive. I like the UMS, but it's lost some of its charm to me in the last couple of years. It used to be a fun way to see...

Fender CIJ 1951 reissue bridge swap questions

sounds good. i had limited success using chromes (getting the silk to line up right) once upon a time. i was mostly curious about the locking convertible--if it's basically a gotoh 206, that answers my biggest question. i haven't had any problems using three screw mounts (yet), so that's not...

Fender CIJ 1951 reissue bridge swap questions

Once I find a suitable top-loader (I know one is around here somewhere), I'll send it to you, Walter. Flatwounds are one potential reason for the top load option, for sure. It sounds silly, but I really just like to have options. Being a repair guy, what do you know about that "locking...

Fender CIJ 1951 reissue bridge swap questions

Certainly the whole point of this thread is to find a bridge that uses 3 mounting screws, has top load (as well as string through) and maybe something in a "high mass" design. The interwebs are great for finding parts. I wouldn't even know about any of my options without 'em. Last time...

Fender CIJ 1951 reissue bridge swap questions

This is true. I occasionally find one for sale, but they're totally the coelacanth of bass bridges. It wouldn't be my first choice, anyway. I'm really really interested in that "locking convertible" one. JZ

Fender CIJ 1951 reissue bridge swap questions

Greetings, fellow TBers. I've searched for opinions on this issue, and came up with zip. I'm probably committing all sorts of TB sins by posting in the wrong forum, etc, etc, etc. I have a Fender CIJ '51 reissue that I purchased used a while back that I'm finally getting around to making...

    Ampeg SVT- IIP

I like mine a lot. $400 seems really steep to me, though. I paid 1/4 that at the rock stick mega haus a few years back. I don't know much about it, though--when I plug it in, it just works.

    Mic's vs DI?

Amen to that. Which DI does a good job in this application, Jimmy? I've been using several, and they've all been sub-par. I've found that a couple of mics (Shure SM7 or EV RE20) in front of any of my cabs does the job, and there's no need for phase-alignment or mixing or anything. My 2...

    Mic's vs DI?

The Beta 52 is really scooped, too. The Sansamp was a fail for me. We did a lot of experimenting to figure out what worked with my bass/amp/band and after doing several channels of bass on a couple of tracks, we found something that sounds "right" for our band/songs.

Mesa Boogie Bass 400 (not +) tube rec.

I've never done an a/b with a plus and a non-plus. I've actually been thinking that I need to get rid of one of my mesas. I love 'em to death, and they've essentially served me well for about 5 years, but both of my bands aren't loud enough to merit 200 watts of anything. I know that I'd love...

Mesa Boogie Bass 400 (not +) tube rec.

I used to have a faxed version of the owner's manual (wish that I had a pdf). Channel one is a lot different (quieter) than channel 2. I have two of these amps, and this sounds like normal behavior (and a lot cheaper than a re-tube). The manual says something to the effect of "pick whichever...

Band fired me now needs my help

I've been fired from every band that I've ever been in. Some firings went well (justified), and others were out of the blue. This one sounds unreasonable to me, so to hell with them. I'd tell them that you didn't have the time to teach someone bass, because your schedule is full with the new...

Best mic for recording low tuned bass

+1 on not using kick drum mics. i used to use a beta 52 +DI, which is cool if you're not seeking to cut through, but the RE20 or a shure sm7 is a much better choice if i want to be heard, and I don't bother much with the DI signal anymore (both of 'em are basically flat), which means that...

    Marshall JCM 800 / Ampeg cab....WOW

I just used my (new to me) JCM 800 bass series 50 watt with my Ampeg 810e over the weekend to finish some recordings that have been languishing for a year (a bad DI ground loop pretty much ruined my previous takes, then the computer bit the dust, etc, etc). My recordist/guitarist, Greg, was...

What side of the drummer should the Bass set up??

I'd rather be on the floor tom side, but I've had problems with the bass rig causing sympathetic vibrations in the drum, so I usually wind up on the hi hat side to simplify things for the sound man.
