Double Bass Your motivation as a musician

All three! Music got me interested... then once I'd started playing, I wanted to be a better musician. Playing with others (i.e playing out) and a few lessons makes me better, and once in a band I soon realised I enjoy playing for the enjoyment of others - watching people in an audience having a...

200w or 500w amplifier combo for local gigs?

I have the Rumble 500c. Works very well in an 8-piece combo (drums, 2 brass, 1guitar, 1 keys, 2 singers.... and me!). Indoor events don't need any help, some outdoor events benefit from an extension cabinet. Here it is at a local outdoor event, with a TC Electronics 250w extension speaker...

Novelty bass (or guitar) related presents which are actually useful!

Yes, the silicone tray has the notes in it too. While the guitars are easy to extract intact, the notes are somewhere between extremely difficult and bloody impossible to get out whole!

Novelty bass (or guitar) related presents which are actually useful!

It's particularly hot here in the UK - temperatures well into the 30s (celsius). My daughter bought me these ice "cubes" for Christmas a few years ago. I've been enjoying them this week while I'm on our work summer shutdown. Anyone else have novelty presents which turned out to be actually...

    Youtube Kicked Me Outta Algorithm

Nice work - it sits very nicely against the original track.

Don't laugh... it's my first attempt!

After lots of practice, this has swiftly become my favourite. I had no idea that fretless could be so much fun. Here it is in action, at a local outdoor gig a couple of weeks ago - subbing for the regular bassist while he's on holiday.

Gig Report... Subbed for a mate, had a really good time! My first outdoor gig.

Had a great time a couple of weekends ago, subbed for a mate in his party band. A load of funk, soul, R&B and the like covers. Played in the Abington Park Bandstand (Northampton, UK). My first ever outdoor gig, was great fun. Used my Boss wireless system too - a liberating experience...

Aria & Aria Pro II Club (Part Four)

I love Spa as a circuit. Watching the cars shimmy through eau-rouge is a thing of beauty. Went there as part of the test team a few years ago, Spa itself is a lovely place to be. We go as a family to Silverstone about 1 year in 3 (we live an hour away from it) and always have a great time. It's...

    Finally did it!

Welcome to being a performer! When's the next show? And.... are you looking forward to it? It's a special feeling, seeing people dancing and enjoying themselves while you're up there playing.

It is indeed a fun thing! I got it from Droplight Industries, on Etsy. Quite cheap (if you ignore the shipping cost US to UK).

    Your Gig in One Photo

Abington Park, Northampton (UK) yesterday... My first time as sub for this band, while their regular bass player is on holiday. What a great summer gig! Never played an outdoor event before. Loved it.

    Band Name Ideas?

In a previous band, we played Black Hole Sun amongst several Alice in Chains tunes, and lots of Grunge covers. It proved to be our nemesis - it was the only song we ever did badly (only periodically, most times it went well). If you're not concentrating, there's nowhere to hide with a bum bass...

    Fretless/Headless/neckthrough 5 string

That's a great looking bass - makes my first ever build attempt (which I finished last Christmas) look like a kid's toy! And the pics in order of build are great - it's quite a process. Lovely work!

I'm running my 500C with a TC Electronics RS112 (1 x 12") for outdoor events / bigger gigs. Works (and sounds) a treat for me! Many genres, everything from Blues and Motown to classic or hard Rock and modern Pop.

Don't laugh... it's my first attempt!

I tried both ways - i felt that upside down (viewed from the back) looks better when viewed from the front. A more balanced headstock. As that's the way most people will see it!

Thanks. And you're right about painting the grain in the ash. I actually thought about the first option you mentioned once I'd got the primer coat on, but then decided to see what it looked like with the first coat of paint. While it's not smooth, i went with the "let the grain relief show a...

Don't laugh... it's my first attempt!

Thanks - it's taken just over a year of on-off work (around DIY in our own house, and both kids' houses - as well as a demanding day-job). And lots (and lots) of sawdust. Like I said earlier, I've kept a photo diary of the bass through each stage, I'll put those together with some words of...

Don't laugh... it's my first attempt!

Well, after lots of thinking about it and a chance find of a nicely seasoned piece of Ash big enough for a through-neck in my brother's garage (along with quite a lot of encouragement from him), I've finally had a go at making a bass guitar. I didn't own a fretless... so thought it worth having...

The things we take for granted.....

I work with a lot of Graduates in my day-job. I have to constantly remind them that there are no "dumb" questions, as that's how we learn. All of us. And we're all grateful for the people who take the time to answer them generously for us. The only truly dumb questions.... are the ones we don't ask!

    Fender quality control 2025

Totally agree with that statement. The only way to put this to a group test may be a simple vote - how many good ones have people had versus how many bad ones? However, we all know that people in general (me included) are far more vociferous in shouting about the poor ones than we are at...
