When listening to another bass player either at store, live, etc.. would you rather hear some crazy chops running up and down the neck, a crazy insane slap, or a killing groove that's in the pocket?

I have a basic question about replacing pickups. Do i have to solder the wire to the pots when relacing or can i just leave the wire from the existing pickup to the pot and connect the wires to each other to avoid soldering. Just need your opinions. Thanks
