Yes, that's not normal, but if I wire the negative through the switch I'll get a loud noise when disconnected. I think the fender preamp is still getting the negative from battery somehow through the circuit ground.

I have one KZ5 amber also. If you want to save some money (at least for now) don't swap everything. In my case I've only installed a Bart HR5.3 electronics and kept the stock pickups and she plays wonderfull, IMO.

I'd say that it depends on your amp DI output. Some amplifiers have the lineout totally independent from the preamp and any other adjusts. This means you can make any changes on your amplifier and the line output doesn't changes, so you don't need a external DI. If this is not your case I...
