The First Headless 6-String Stingray On The Internet?

Now that is thinking outside the box. String spacing that narrow is giving me the willies just thinking about it, but if it works for you that's great! The 3D printed nut is a great idea, especially for an unusual project like this. Nice work!

    Real bass or bass synth?

Sounds real enough to me, though definitely quite a lot of lows in that tone. I think some of the playing choices like slides are the main thing leading me to say actual bass guitar rather than since - it seems like more work to recreate that with a synth than it is to just play it on a bass. I...

Nickle alternative to dr hi beams

Indeed, I was also going to suggest sticking with the Hi Beams a bit longer. I don't think any other strings really sound quite like them while offering the round core feel. It took me several months to adjust to them after years of playing only flats, but now they just feel like bass strings. I...

Debarge "I Like It" Flats of Rounds?

I'm also guessing p bass with flats, but it's quite bright. Jamming along with my jazz bass/old hi beams I'm really not that far off. More importantly, what a track! Never heard this before. The bass tone is great, it's mixed plenty loud, and playing is excellent. The song is quite catchy as well.

Your Jazz Bass settings: static or fluid?

I haven't played another jazz bass in years, so I can't really comment on any sonic differences resulting from the stack knob setup versus the typical VVT arrangement. I will say my bass (a 62 AVRI) sounds great, but that isn't necessarily due to the knobs. I'd say the main advantage is it looks...

Your Jazz Bass settings: static or fluid?

Y'all don't hear a difference when you start rolling back the volume on one pickup with the other on full? I'm genuinely surprised this is a subject of debate. It's quite audible on my bass (stack knob setup FWIW). The neck down just a touch is perfect - it adds a little midrange cut to the...

Your Jazz Bass settings: static or fluid?

I've never had occasion to change pickups mid-song (too fiddly), but I alternate between using the neck pickup alone and using both with the neck rolled back a touch. I'm still learning to love the bridge pickup solo sound and could be tempted to try it out in a band mix in the near future...

Strings to tame a Sting Ray ?

Hi Beams are, of course, quite bright when new as you note. I love them after the newness wears off and I can keep playing them for a long time after that. I think you should go with those first based on what you wrote. My experience with Sunbeams (many years ago) was that they are too dark for...

How to tune Drop b on a 5 string

There's a fairly well-established guitar tradition of "drop X" tuning being equivalent to drop D (DADGBE) with all strings tuned down until you hit "X." In this case, the guitar is tuned down 1.5 steps and then the lowest string an additional step, resulting in a BF#BEG#C# tuning (I think...)...

How to tune Drop b on a 5 string

In general bass strings are pretty tough to play if tuned up, but that's certainly an option to match your guitar tuning. You should look for extra light/super light strings for the F#BEA strings (30/50/70/90 gauge or lighter) and keep your current B string if you want to use this approach...

NBD x2 - Fender American Original Content

Those are sweet! I have an old ('98?) AVRI jazz and there's definitely something to it. The tone has a lot of character. I also have an AO strat and it's nicer than my old jazz bass in many ways - I would love to find an AO precision someday.

    Recommendations for diversity?

I love flats, but I have DR Hi Beams on my jazz bass at the moment and I’ve been enjoying them quite a bit. They’re fairly flexible with the round core and while they’re bright, I don’t find them to be abrasively so. Worth a shot in the interest of diversity.

    Stingray neck thickness

My 2008 Stingray had the largest neck I've ever personally encountered on a bass. I found it to be pretty comfortable, though it took a little time to adjust. No idea how it compared to the measurements you took, unfortunately. As Laklandfan said above, there's probably some variation in neck...

Dua Lipa- "Break My Heart" EFFECTS

I was playing along to this tune the other day (great bass lines all over this album), and rolling the bass knob all the way down on my Stingray for that part does a pretty decent job of approximating the effect to my ears. I'm pretty confident that basically any EQ pedal would do the trick well...

Double Bass Instructor Recommendations for New DB Player - Seattle, WA

Hello TBDB, I'm planning to rent a double bass locally in Seattle after 20 years of playing electric bass and guitar. Wah-wah pedal recommendation needed

Since OP asked about envelope filters, too, it really is worth looking for an envelope filter that can be controlled via expression pedal if you think you want an envelope filter anyway (they actually seem more useful to me than wah for bass). You will ultimately save money and possibly some...

Flat fretboard radi seem unnatural and counter to human ergonomics.

I definitely notice fingerboard radius on guitar, and prefer the modern Fender 9.5" radius over all others. It's just enough curve to make chording easier than on a flatter radius, while still allowing easy setup for string bends. On bass, however, I do relatively little chording and no string...

    Which Octave Pedal?

I would recommend trying both with your bass if possible. The MXR tracked a lot better for me, so that's the one I ended up with. I liked the sound of the Aguilar better if I'm honest, and I bet it would track fine with most basses. I use a Stingray, which is kind of problematic for analog octave.

    Way Huge Russian Pickle

I'm pretty excited. The Reverb demo doesn't sound the best (nor the worst), but the other guitar demos I've come across sound quite nice - much better than what Reverb put up. I suspect this will work great on bass as it has pretty decent midrange happening.

at my wit's end trying to teach my teen how to park perpendicular

I think the city bus (or a bicycle?) to community college is a good idea regardless of the driving situation, though the driving situation does not sound very promising based on this thread. Besides, getting around without a car builds character and is generally healthier, safer, and cheaper.

Best Octaver for 5-String (Low Notes)

High pass filters are frequently built into bass amplifiers for the purpose of speaker protection, which is what Ewo was referring to. The BOD doesn't have any HPF circuitry in it.

    Delay similar to the DL-4

I second the Flashback recommendation. They sound much better than the DL4 and has reverse. You should be able to find a used on on the cheap and they are WAY smaller than the DL4.

Best Octaver for 5-String (Low Notes)

A digital octave effect like a Bass Whammy or a POG should be able to track down that low, but the tone will be different from an analog octave. There is no way any analog octave will be able to get below low E - my Bass Octave Deluxe works down to F# with my Jazz, but only down to A# with my...
