Double Bass When to use HatPeg Tuners

I don't know about historic italian basses, but my modern italian made my Sergio Scaramelli has wooden hat peg tuners with brass shafts. I don't think they're super common on italian basses, but you can find them out there.

Double Bass College Auditions comin up 2013

Well since seniors are starting to share their audition news, I'll chime in too. I'll be heading to Rice University next year. It was my top pick, can't wait for the adventure to begin! Anyone else on these boards going to Rice next fall?

Double Bass College Auditions comin up 2013

I've heard nothing but great things about David Moore at USC. Talk to your teacher though and get their input. If they're well connected in the bass community they can probably help you figure out which school and teacher would be the best fit for you. If money makes any difference, I'd also...

    Double Bass Michael Dolling Bows

I'm looking into getting a new bow soon. I'll be selling my C.L. Bazin at some point, but until then I'll just be trying out some different bows and getting a feel for what I want in a new bow. I'm borrowing a couple bows from a friend who's selling right now, one of which is a Michael...

    Double Bass Audition Repertoire

Play what makes you most comfortable and you believe represents your playing best. And definitely consult your teacher. I played Koussevitzky this year for my auditions. It's a simple piece, but it got the job done and got me into my top school. Simple is good.

Double Bass Recital Ideas......Cello and Violin Music

Thanks for the suggestions and advice guys! I talked with my teacher, and we're thinking... Bach Cello Suite No.1 Gigue Hindemith Sonata movements 1 and 2, possibly 3 if there's enough time to learn it. Paganini Moses Variations Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata movement 3 It's a short line up...

Double Bass Recital Ideas......Cello and Violin Music

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. First, to address your point about the standard rep. I've spent quite a bit of time working on standard solo rep over the last couple years. I did the entire Koussevitzky Concerto with a local orchestra last June (my first solo performance...

Double Bass Recital Ideas......Cello and Violin Music

I forgot to add, I've worked on two movements of Bach so far since I had to play them for my college auditions. The Gigue from the 1st suite and the Allemande from the 3rd. And in no way do I expect to play all of the music on that list in one recital, probably just a few things from that...

Double Bass Recital Ideas......Cello and Violin Music

Hey folks. I'm graduating from high school this year, and I would like to give a recital to celebrate the end of one phase of my life, and the beginning of the next phase. I have some ideas for pieces I would like to play, but I'm not quite certain yet. I would like to ask you all for some...

Double Bass Do most orchestral players sit?

I'm an orchestral player, I've stood for all 8 years I've played the bass. I have occasionally sat in orchestra, but I much prefer to stand because I feel much more control that way. I am considering having the laborie endpin installed into my bass soon, though, in which case I would obviously...

    Double Bass Seth Kimmel #25

Congrats on your new bass! A friend of mine owns one of Seth Kimmel's basses also. It's a very nice bass; easy to play, articulate, powerful, and it has a very earthy tone (best way I can describe it, haha). Have fun with it!

Double Bass Going to be auditioning for college soon

I wouldn't hold off on buying a new bass simply because it will take time to adjust to it. I bought a new bass last winter, and even though it took a couple weeks for me to start to feel comfortable with it, I still sounded a gazillion times better than I had with my previous bass. If you can...

Double Bass Getting a Bass Commisioned

I bought a bass made by italian maker Sergio Scaramelli several months back. It's a terrific instrument that I couldn't be happier with. The high end is very clear and has a warm and velvety tone, making it perfect for solo playing, and the low end has a very deep, rich, and layered sound...

    Double Bass The essentials.

Great idea! Having all of this info in one place will be super helpful. I'd be happy to contribute to the wiki at some point. I've listened to a lot of recordings of these solos and excerpts, so I'd be happy to post some of my favorites.

Double Bass Francois Rabbath in Minneapolis/St. Paul

Haha, I'm actually seriously considering it now. I'm going to try out a few basses that have them and see if I like the way it feels. If I do I might have the operation done on my own bass.

Did I meet you on Thursday? I was the 17 year old who played the exposition of the Vanhal Concerto. Sorry, I'm just trying to match the names of the people on this forum to faces. :)

His recital Saturday night was absolutely superb. I'm so glad that I was able to meet him and hear him perform. I've been inspired once again. Russell, I probably saw you there. Did you happen to see a 17 year old male with golden brown hair wearing a collared and striped t-shirt with dark...

Double Bass Francois Rabbath in Minneapolis/St. Paul

Yesterday evening's masterclass at the U of M was terrific! I played the exposition of the first movement of the Vanhal Concerto for him. Although after I played it for him he didn't comment on my piece at all, he just talked about the angle of the bass and the kind of endpin that he uses, and...

You're playing Mozart 35 next week!? What a coincidence because I am too! :p I'll try and take a picture of my fingerings for the last movement and post it for you this weekend. If that doesn't work, I'll show them to you when I see you on Monday.

Double Bass Where do YOU get your strings?

Seconded. I actually live in the Twin Cities, so I can pick them up right from their shop, but they sell strings online to people all over the country. Their prices are great, and they have a huge selection to choose from.

Double Bass Is It Bad To Mix Strings?

Depends on the strings. I see a lot of players who use Bel Cantos G, D, A with a Spirocore E. It seems to work for them. I once tried Bel Cantos G, D, A with a Helicore E. That worked pretty well. One combination that I wouldn't recommend are Evah Pirazzis and Bel Cantos. I tried...

Double Bass College Auditions Results 2012

Yeah, that's not uncommon. I know someone who graduated from Juilliard over 20 years ago, who nowadays makes most, if not all, of his living giving private lessons. He's played in a few professional orchestras over the years, but he had to leave them all because he couldn't make a living that...

Double Bass College Auditions Results 2012

That's a fine way of looking at things, but it's much harder to get scholarships and financial aid years after you've graduated from high school. I know people who have been offered full ride scholarships to good schools, but who have turned them down to go off and study the arts. For most of...

Double Bass College Auditions Results 2012

College is a terrific place, no doubt about it, but for people in our profession I think it's a good idea to have a back-up plan. The truth is that most people do not make it in the music world, and many of those that do still have a hard time making a living. If you have another degree to...
