What to do when a friend asks you to join their band...

Thanks to everybody for their responses to this post. They've all been helpful and entertaining. Just a couple of things I would clarify about the person that asked me to join their band. They're NOT a beginner. They do not need 'encouragment and guidance from a more seasoned player'. But...

Audition woes - is is just me? Share the reasons you didn't get the gig

I don't really audition for bands. Either I'm involved in their inception or they find me somehow. But I did put my hand up for a friends of friends band when they started looking for a bassplayer. I really dug the band, they were really accomplished musically and I already knew and liked 2 of...

What to do when a friend asks you to join their band...

Just interested to know how others respond to the situation of being asked to join a friend's band but they're considerably below the standard of musicianship you want to play with. Either they're amateurish, substandard or their music is just plain terrible. I never want to discourage or offend...

    '64 Precision with skunk stripe

I have googled this to no avail, so a question for the vintage Fender experts. Did Fender do any Pre-Cbs Precisions with a Rosewood board but a skunk stripe? I'm out in Australia and '64 came up for sale but I'd never heard of such a thing. It certainly looked authentic in every other way and...

Who SHOULD decide how your bass sounds live?

Interesting. Most of the shows I play (and attend) are smallish club gigs. Most of the musicians are part-time players while most of the sound engineers are full time professionals. In this world I see a LOT of bass players who don't really know where there bass should sit in the mix and the...

Which players DO increase the value of a bass if they owned it?

Has anybody suggested Gene Simmons? If not, why not? As far as I'm concerned, Paul McCartney would have to lead the list. Because he's famous as a musician, famous as a songwriter, famous as a celebrity, and (somewhere down the list) famous as a bass player. Personally, I wish you could convince...

    Explain the Fender Bass VI

As far as tuning is concerned, it's a bass with two extra high strings. I've gigged with mine as a bass but if you're a dedicated bass player (as opposed to a bass player that also plays guitar like me) the feel is very different. It's a short scale, the strings are much closer together, and the...

What's the market value for this vintage P? Update: This is Jeff Andrews' main bass

Parts basses do still have value, depending on the parts. But the dates need to be verified. I'd pay a LOT more for a verified '68 neck and body than a 'maybe' '68 neck and a 'maybe' '75 body. And I personally wouldn't trust a seller who couldn't or wouldn't demonstrate these things.

Fender Truss Rod Tutorial...is this a joke?

A couple of things. If you loosen the neck whilst it's under string tension and then push against the tension, it's almost impossible to damage anything because you're pushing against the force of the strings. You just can't push it that far. Fender necks are immensely strong. How many broken...

    Heat treating a neck?

I did this on an older Teisco guitar and it worked. It got the guitar pretty cheap and it was unplayable so I decided it was worth the risk. I WAS a bit careless and scorched the binding but the neck has stayed straight and playable 5 years later.

What changed your life(bass related only please:))

For me it would be getting my Tech 21 Bass Driver DI. I'd always prefer to use an SVT or any other quality valve head. But the reality is I do lots of gigs with unpredictable backline and the bass is only being DI'd anyway. With the BDDI I'm (almost) always confident of pulling a decent stage...

Big thick necks and neck dive on P basses

I have these and a (heavy) Badass bridge. Light tuners make a huge amount of difference because you're removing the weight from the end of the neck. Res-o-lite tuners are literally half the weight of regular tuners. I was amazed how much difference they make to the feel and the balance of the bass.

If you were going to change your rig, which would you change first, amp or cab?

To state the obvious, a good head won't save a bad cab or vice versa. The important thing is that they're well matched to each other and they respond to what you're doing. For me, I need to pull a good tone from the amp and/or other devices in the signal chain or it doesn't matter what cab I'm...

Do you think most audience members know when the bassist messes up?

I've reached the conclusion that if the band sounds good, you'll get compliments. Even if your playing isn't that great. But you'll only get compliments from other bass players if YOU play well. The irony is that a lot of audience members can't tell the difference.

    Quick soldering question.

This is correct. Higher wattage irons don't generate more heat. They just lose less heat when they come into contact with much colder metals and so are able to solder larger wire, pots, etc.

What do you prefer? No Gig? Or bad gig?

I've actually played quite a few gigs that were bad on paper but turned out to be good in reality. It totally depends on what your bottom line is. I basically play for my own enjoyment so will accept a low payer as long as it's fun. I just think it's important that the whole band is on the same...

If this was a card game I have 3 pairs. Do any of you have doubles (not twins)of a bass?

I have two pair. Two Precisions and two Gibson Grabbers. The Precisions are a vintage parts bass made up from a '66 neck and a '72 body, and a '57 re-issue from '89. The Grabbers are a '78 with maple fretboard and a '76 fretless G-3 with an ebony board.

Two Identical Amps-Two Identical Cabs Rig

I would definitely stack the cabs. I would probably EQ the heads slightly differently. I would experiment with the pedals to determine where to put them in the chain. The dry/wet concept doesn't always work as well as you think it will. Sometimes it just dilutes the sound of the pedals and makes...

    CL delivers again

Well I hate to be cynical, but whenever anybody says 'our concept is for an emotional, rather than technical approach to music' I get the overwhelming impression that what they're really saying is 'we can't really play, so it would be beneficial to both of us if you couldn't really play either'...

Anyone Use Their Thumb to Pluck

I use thumb, fingers or pick depending on the song. They all sound different. Leo Fender installed the tug bar on the original Precisions because he expected players to use their thumb!

All Original '78 Musicmaster or Parts bass?

I was watching this and it sold for $670 Australian which is a bargain if it's a US bass with a Japanese neck plate. It's still good value if it's a Japanese body with a US neck.

Your opinion on this body shape ....

I like it, but to my eye the top horn looks a bit chunky. Contouring might make all the difference though. Good work at coming up with something that's looks classic, but a bit unique.

    Gibson Grabber/Ripper -influenced build.

I have two Grabbers. The Grabber with the sliding pickup, and a G-3 with three Bill Lawrence pickups. I have the G-3 wired so that the middle pickup is always active, and the toggle adds either the neck, bridge, or both pickups in series with the middle pickup. It sounds FANTASTIC.

Confession Time: Admit How You Are Different From The Bass Player Norm

I don't have favourite bass players. I listen to songs and if I like a song then everything goes together and nothing stands out. And that includes the basslines. I don't even know the names of the bass players from some of my favourite bands.

Band leader wants me to do new bass part after drummer has died.

One thing I need to point out. I believe I've done a great bass track that enhances the song, locks in with the drums, and gives movement and space. My desire to keep it is not because of the death of the drummer. It's because I think it's a great part and I don't think I can improve on it. With...

Band leader wants me to do new bass part after drummer has died.

To add some detail, the band is basically democratic and I'm fundamentally given free rein for the bass parts. I always take on board and respond to suggestions and opinions about my parts when songs are worked up in rehearsal (we all do), but this is different because the rhythm track is...

Band leader wants me to do new bass part after drummer has died.

A fairly sad story here. I'm in an all original band that recently completed a European tour of 32 shows. We're from Australia so this is a fairly big undertaking. We had a French drummer for the tour who was a very good friend of the band. At the tail end of the tour we went into the studio in...

    Headstock angle?

I have a Gibson Grabber and the headstock is made from a separate piece of timber, thereby eliminating the cross-grain weak point. It's an immensely strong join and I've never seen one broken. It might possibly effect the sound, but I doubt it.

    Jazz Bass Mod Question

For the record, I installed a volume and tone bypass in my P bass as another tonal option and it DOES sound drastically different to running tone and volume on 10. It's like having a bright switch. There's a real metallic clank which I find really useful in some songs and with certain overdrive...

"1967" Precision: Looks refin to me, tell me I'm wrong

To ask am obvious question, on what basis are they claiming this to be a '67? The neckplate obviously isn't '67. Do they have any internal photos to back up this claim? Claiming it to be a '67 if they can't back it up is false advertising.

Soundguys won't direct out from my amp

Out of the hundreds of gigs I've played since I started using a Sansamp, I've only had one sound guy insist on using their own DI, and no sound guys have insisted on using the amp DI. Sound guys love Sansamps because they're simple and sound good, therefore making the sound guy's job easier. Amp...

    Analog delay for bass

I use a Way Huge Supa Puss which is fantastic for bass. It has a tone control, gain control, and a modulation circuit. I like to use the tone control wound around toward the treble side. With that and the modulation, it gives a ghostly wash to the high end and harmonics but doesn't muddy up the...

Loosening Strings to Ship YOUR bass....

I'm glad that this thread happened! I'm heading off on my third overseas tour in a couple of weeks and this time I won't detune. From Australia it's a 24 hour flight so my bass and guitar will spend a lot of time in the air. I always assumed detuning was recommended because that's what I'd been...
