+1 on the strings. However I'm not sure about some of the other observations. Passive Sandbergs, imo, are similar to the better examples of passive Fenders (without graphite rods) in response and the Alnico pickups in the TT passive are exceptional (and I've tried a lot of pickups). I have 5...

Poll: Are you bringing the L-1000 or Precision to this gig?

My '81 L1000 does a great P tone but maybe my 44 yr old Wunkays' MFD pickup has mellowed with age. The SB-1 MFD pickups are very aggressive in my experience. I bought a set to put in a P type bass but took them out because I couldn't get a Precision tone out of them.

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

That depends on the pickups. I have 5 passive Sandbergs all with Alnico pickups and they can all cop the Fender sound. The big pole ceramics are never going to sound vintage but there's nothing inherent in the rest of the bass design to prevent this (apart from maybe the tighter bottom end in...

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

Hi, nice bass. I have 3 Umbos, 1 very early one (2009), a 2015 and newer California 2 series. That does look like it might be ebony, I'm sure it was an option then. The pickups are made by Haussel, they are a special design made with Alnico 2 magnets, a little thumpier than a regular Jazz. I'm...

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

The Sandberg P pickup, at least, is a radically different sounding pickup to the Delano (much more open sounding) so I'm sure the motive was not just to produce an "own brand" cheaper version. They did carry on using Delanos in the TM and other non-California basses.

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

I had a VM4 with Delanos and I found the P pickup very nasal sounding with the reverse style position and ended up putting a Sandberg big pole in it which I much preferred. I have a (probably wrong) theory that the Sandbergs are made by Delano to Sandberg's spec to suit the pickup layout. The...

    Markbass TTE 500

I never noticed any white noise from my TTE 500 and my TTE 801 certainly does not have any (preamp looks the same part).

I used a Gator GP66 Dual bass pedal bag for my old TTE500. It still fits my slightly larger TTE801. The Stairville SB120 also fits but isn't quite as padded.

This is probably a better video for the Alnicos. The pickups might be in different positions though. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sandberg+california+tt4+marlowedk

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

Those are Alnico and in real life are vintage sounding (sorry about posting that video). Obviously strings will make a big difference too. When I got my my passive TT4 I had to adjust the pickup height quite a bit to get that vintage alnico feel. The Delanos are not quite as fussy about height...

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

I'm pretty sure that those are not the Delano's and CME have just copy pasted some blurb. They also say it's active/passive The small pole pickups are usually Alnicos on passive TT's unless they're Superlights.

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

Yeah, I listened to it again after I posted it and it sounded more mellow and polite than I remembered! I can only assume that it's the signal chain. My own TT4 passive sounds very vintage (I've owned many Jazzes) and also has tones between front and both pickups that remind me of a Gibson...

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

I put some Nordstrands on it and was very happy (not a fan of the ceramic big pole Delanos). I took them off when I sold the bass, intending to put them in the passive TT4 that I bought. The Nordstrands stayed in my drawer. The Sandberg Alnicos are also available for sale as aftermarket I've...

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

The stock pickups in the TT4 passive are fantastic (Sandberg Alnico 5). Very vintage with both pickups on and a very full sounding neck pickup by itself. I tried a few replacements when I had my older active TT4 but these are fabulous.

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

I've no information about them but they look as if they are probably medium/short scale. If they were long scale one of my lovely vintage sounding Sandberg Umbos might have to be sacrificed.

Well, for those that think Sandbergs should only be modern "Fender on steroids" type instruments I'll leave this pic of the new Florence bass.

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

I've previously owned a TM4 and own a TT4 passive. The pickups in the TT4 passive are really good, vintage sounding alnicos. On mine, at least, the neck pickup sounds very P-like while still sounding great with both pickups dialled in. The TM4 I had was great but I'm not a real fan of the...

Markbass ? Why the dislike ?

I'm not sure where your data comes from to say Markbass gear has a high failure rate. I've always been under the impression that it's a very reliable brand (some of this comes from a dealer friend who reports less faults on Markbass than other well known brands). I've owned Markbass heads since...

It's one Flat/scooped/old school switch so no interaction. I have the switch on my Vintage pre and I'm not keen on the preset "old school" voicing in comparison to the old VLE.

Markbass ? Why the dislike ?

My Markbass head wasn't gaudy enough so I replaced the black chickenhead knobs with yellow (actually so that I could see them on a dark stage). A great sounding head.

    Club Sandberg (part 2)

I have 3 Umbos and the front pickup isolated has a very P-like sound. I'm not too sure whether this is due to the slant, the warmer Alnico 11 pickup design or a combination of the two. Great basses though.

It sounds as if it's been modified aftermarket to be passive as default.

Alternative to TI flat with more tension? / Klira Hollowbody 60's

As someone who has a love/hate relationship with TI flats (I hate the uneven tension of the A but love the sound), I recently bought a set of Galli Synthesis flats and they remind me of the TI Jazz flats in everything but tension (they have greater tension, similar or slightly lower than 045...

When I bought my VS4 I loved its light weight and resonance but when I took it out with my band it disappeared in the mix and no amount of eq'ing could get rid of the treble and super fast attack (courtesy of the big pole pickup). I tried a number of pickups in it (Fender Original, G&L MFD etc)...

To get more mids on a Quilter you have to cut bass on the depth control, maybe cut treble a little by setting the contour knob a little clockwise of centre and boost gain or master to compensate. The BB800 doesn't boost treble itself but you can usually get all the control you need by...

I may be able to chip in here. I have a Quilter BB800 and have used and still own a LM2 (much the same as a III) The Quilter goes really well with Markbass cabs IME, with the (still clean) tone being a little more transparent with a slight valve feel especially when the dual stage limiter is...

Yes, it's basically the dimensions of the Club series 121s I had. I only have 1 of the STD's but it gets loud and has a nice bark when pushed. The Std 121HR replaced 2x Barefaced One10's that I couldn't rely would be loud enough for certain pub gigs. Very light too.

Although discontinued I can recommend the STD 121HR if you can find them. I've owned the NY121P, the Traveler 121H and also the old Club 121's. The STD 121HR is more open sounding than the NY and TRV. My STD is my favourite MB cab. Some retailers still have them.

Personally, I'm not keen on high mass bridges or graphite rods (or most ceramic pickups I've tried). All my Sandbergs are passive. I actually put a piece of foam rubber at the bridge underneath the E string on my TT4 to help the string decay slightly faster. Sandbergs are just the right side...
