Impressions of famous musicians you've met

I met Rod Argent and Collin Blunstone from The Zombies a few years back at a venue in Milwaukee. Super-nice and soft spoken guys. Shook hands, signed my record and had a few laughs. They were going to let me buy them a beer but someone important looking wisked them away to start their show.

If you could design a bass bridge...

I have a small shop with a CNC mill and I'm slowly acquiring other equipment. Been picking up small jobs along the way and now I'm considering offering some products I can market on my own.

Which methods of string spacing do you guys prefer?

If you could design a bass bridge...

...which features would be important to you? Which materials would you use? If you knew someone with a machine shop who could produce a prototype, would you be interested in being a guinea pig?

    Peavey 'Mark' series amps

My first "real" bass rig was a Mark IV with matching 1810 cab that I picked up cheap at a local shop. I never had an issue finding the sound or volume I needed. Nostalgia has lead me to tracking down another old Mark head, this time a III. Even through an 8 ohm cab, I have plenty of volume for...

How do you feel about your job?

I've worked in manufacturing and fabrication most of my life. It can be mind numbingly boring and takes its toll on my body. Currently I work for an aircraft manufacturer and have been allowed to stretch my legs a bit working with engineers on prototype projects, designing and building tooling...

Feelin' the bass blues? (Bandless bassists support group)

The first band I've been with in probably ten years just decided that rehearsing once a week to pin down a set list is too much work. I explained to them that once we have a workable set list rehearsals will be very few and far between. Instead, they just want to host a regular open jam which...

Considering a used street bike purchase

As far as mileage, I don't really know. I've had bikes with 10k miles that were a pain in the butt, and bikes with 50k that never needed a thing. So, ultimately I let the general condition of the bike determine whether it's a go or not. If a bike has high mileage but is still in excellent...

Considering a used street bike purchase

I like the old Yamaha Virago 750 and 1100. Not a ton of power but comfy with two people, reliable and cheap. Ditto for Honda Shadow, Suzuki Intruder, Kawasaki Vulcan, Yamaha V-Star... As far as what to look for, most obvious things: brakes, tires, fork seals, oil leaks, etc. Anything else would...

    What's your volume dial setting?

I play mostly small bar gigs with a Little Mark 250 and a 4 ohm Traveler 210, no PA support. My main bass is a passive P (Roger Waters Sig) With preamp set just below clipping, Master is usually around 11 o'clock. Bigger rooms push it up to noon or so. It's starts hitting the limiter hard at...

Best quality cheap bass amp head? Fender? Hartke? Gallien-Krueger? Carvin?

Markbass Blackline 250. On sale now at GC for $260. I love mine and I just played a show through a 4 ohm 2x10 unmiked and rocked the place

    Local bass "hero"

I'm 34 and have been playing since age 12. I believe I've put in plenty of practice time. I can hop on stage and play 30 wrong notes to arrive at 10 right ones too. I choose not to.

I met my wife on Plenty of Fish... Had to weed through some BS and one nighters but we found each other. The more people you meet, the more likely you are to find "the one".

    Local bass "hero"

Small town. It's what the locals like to hear. My band tries to stick to later stuff to stand out a bit, but we still gotta have a core of classics to keep the barflies happy

    Local bass "hero"

I play in a 4 piece cover band and we share our drummer with another local band. His other band was playing a gig at a pub so I went to check them out. It's a three piece classic rock trio made up of some well known and much loved musicians. The show was pretty much what I expected from some of...

Sort of a last outing before we all go to the home...

I highly recommend seeing The Zombies. They're still recording great albums. Evolved, modern albums. Not just reliving past hits to pay the bills. Probably one of the most professional and polished concerts I've ever seen

Howdy TB...can I get some motorcycle buying advice?

How handy are you? How well was the bike taken care of? Most the bikes I've owned were 20-30 years old. Some ran for years with no issues, some were turds. It's a gamble every time. If you don't mind tinkering from time to time, you can get a lot of bike for the money with older Japanese...

    So, my neighbor is angry...

I haven't heard from the neighbor since the incident. I have insulated my basement windows and have been keeping the volume in check despite the drummer's complaints that now he can't hear anyone. I gave the neighbor my phone number and told him to feel free to call if it's too loud. Around here...

    So, my neighbor is angry...

Quite internet-like of you to agree with someone and still feel the need to point out a grammatical error most likely caused by my cell phone's auto-fill. Well done.

    What's *your* favorite Peavey amp??

My first real rig was a Mark IV and the 1810 BW. I was feeling a bit nostalgic so I tracked down a Mark III 400b and I pick her up on Thursday. Funny that I came across this thread! Years ago I was invited to play a country gig but had no amp. They said they had an amp so I agreed to play. The...

    Need advice regarding my neighbors

Buy a couple live traps. Bait with some tasty treats. Once dogs are capture, take them to an animal shelter as strays. Or wait for one of your less patient neighbors to leave out a bowl of antifreeze. I've seen that happen. Terrible

Should I stay in this band?

I'm finding myself in a similar situation lately. At our last rehearsal it became obvious that I was the only one that practiced on my own. It can be very frustrating. I've had the same issue with just jamming certain parts of songs, which seems to be common practice around here, and I find it...

    I need a better amp

Find an old Peavey bass combo with a 15" speaker for $75 to $150. They're a dime a dozen and tend to be reliable. For rehearsal with a drummer, 100 watts should cut it. Worry about a big rig when you get closers to playing out with your band. No need to spend a ton.

    NAD: GK 700RB-II & Neo 212-II

I had this same set up for a while. I liked to run the EQ pretty flat, Contour and Presence on "zero". Sometimes a slight bump in the low mids and back off high mids a hair. The boost control I usually had set to about 9 or 10 o'clock. It is a VERY loud rig for its size and sits nicely in the...

    So, my neighbor is angry...

They are indeed two separate houses separated by about 25 feet. The basement windows never get opened and I will insulate between the outer and inner window. I'm also going to hang some insulation over head and possibly hang some old carpet on the cement walls. Most of this I can do with odds...

    So, my neighbor is angry...

I didn't pass judgement. The guy could have been a little more adult about it. This is the first complaint I've heard. A simple "please keep it down" would have been better than screaming and swearing at me. All day long there is lawnmowers, snowblowers, weed eaters, loud trucks, brush chippers...

    So, my neighbor is angry...

The local ordinance says no noise can be audible at the property line between the hours of 10pm and 7am. This includes but is not limited to musical instruments or loudspeakers. I think that covers me legally but I still have to deal with a cranky neighbor. Bummer...

    So, my neighbor is angry...

The guitar player from my band came over today and we were doing a little freestyle jamming (beer drinking) and having some laughs in my basement. We kept the volume low enough to here each other say "Go to C" or "I need a beer" or what-have-you, when suddenly my neighbor whom I rarely see is...

    Best amp you played through

1967 Ampeg B15, Sovtek Bassov Bluesboy MIG 100b through a Fender Bassman 215 (believe it or not, loved this rig), and currently digging my Markbass stuff. It's probably the best Solid State amp I've had
  36. Cap'n Redbeard

    Worst amp you played through

Heads: Crate BX2200, I think it was called. 200w (doubtful) head bought new in an emergency. Carvin R600, a million bells and whistles, could not get a decent tone. Cabs: Ampeg 410hlf, all mud, no mids. Combos: SWR LA12, zero headroom, sounded OK with volume really low. Yorkville 115/150, zero...

    Upgrading Markbass Rig

Had I not just ordered yet another bass I'd be a little less reluctant to spend more. I've been playing for over 20 years and truth be told I love "entry level" gear. I just sold a $2200 bass because I prefer my $300 bass. I think price has little to do with anything (within reason) and people...

    Upgrading Markbass Rig

No offense taken but this rig is not my first. I bought a 4 ohm 210 initially to use with my SVT-CL at rehearsal because it was easier to haul up and down stairs than my 410hlf. I liked the sound of the cab so much that I figured I would try one of their heads as well. I didn't want to spend a...
