    Help me understand this mentality

Cool, maybe we can zero in on this difference a little. My impression is that, from OP's perspective, ghoster asking for a letter of reference with no explanation of ghosting IS waltzing back into a professional relationship, expecting it to be unchanged by the ghosting. Is it what's being...

    Help me understand this mentality

Okay, Seanto and MordBass, you two seem to have taken up the banner of "ghosting and coming back from it to ask for something as though it never happened is reasonable," so I have some follow-up questions. I hope you won't take them as aggressive or judgmental. I'm totally just curious. You...

    Help me understand this mentality

...Actually I can offer a second thing, which I'm always thinking in relation to my students: Why don't they just lie? In my day, when you didn't hand in your paper on time, you told your prof that your Grandma just died, or your car broke down, or your house caught on fire. If they let you...

    Help me understand this mentality

As a prof with students who do this (and other equally baffling things) with some frequency, I am super interested in this question. I understand this: And I understand this: But they don't really go together do they? If you're confrontation/shame averse, why put yourself in the situation...

    Music Genres for Dummies

Doom is basically rehashing Black Sabbath with various twists (tuned down, slowed down, more fuzz...). Death is usually faster, less melodic, and less attached to blues riffs. It's also broader and vaguer as a category. (Sorry. At least I kept it short?)

Slipknot fan club (the band not the literal knot)

I've listened to my fair share of Slipknot. They're really good at writing riffs that feel asymmetrical, as though accumulating potential energy with every repetition. I drifted away several years ago, but I continue to go back again and again for one song: Iowa. I can't think of another song...

Can I call myself a musician?

Not to beat a dead horse, but this is about professional organizations and state regulations that attempt to guarantee a level of quality and expertise. This doesn't mean there aren't people without professional credentials who might be just as good or better than a lisenced professional, nor...

    Didgeridoo-like fuzz/dist/od/tubes?

Hi All! I am interested in producing a distorted sound best represented by the clips below (clips linked to good isolated tones) and wondered if anyone had any advice on gear (or technique?) that might be useful: If I were to try to describe this sound (which I'm probably bad at), I would...

Minimal pedal setup for extreme metal bassist

IME The tone on a fully cranked ODB-3 is pretty great, especially for the $$$, but to be clear it IS a noisy pedal... Lots of humming and buzzing ALL the time... So keep in mind the extra cost of something to gate it. YMMV.

wives vs basses (shhhhh! don't let them see this thread!)

THIS is the trick. None of this "honesty" nonsense. When my wife asks me if I'm okay with her mom visiting for the weekend, I tell her that would be delightful. When I ask her why she's looking at me like a turd she just stepped in, I would very much like her to say, "Nothing... Just...
